Riot Games’ flagship first-person shooter VALORANT will be released on June 2nd after a nearly two month-long beta period. While Riot has been able to receive and incorporate fan feedback on the game since the beta began, players are still finding bugs and exploits as its release date grows nearer and nearer. The latest exploit to be widely shared among the VALORANT community, posted to the game’s subreddit by user Pinkytoe1994, allows players to artificially raise their econ rating, a stat tracked for each player per match that approximates a user’s ability to spend efficiently.

Econ rating is calculated as a factor of total damage dealt for each 1000 credits spent. Weapons cost between 200 (for a sidearm) and 4500 credits (for a sniper rifle) with a standard rifle requiring 2900 credits. Dying makes players lose all purchased weapons while surviving a round allows players to retain the weapons in their inventory. Econ rating, then, is not just an indicator of efficient spending but of survivability too.

Exploiting the game’s method for calculating econ rating requires tricking its algorithms into thinking you never spent any money on guns, while in actuality receiving your weapon or weapons of choice.

This can be done by first having a friend on your team request a weapon you want. Buy it, and have said friend drop the weapon on the ground immediately. If you pick it up only after the round has started, the game will not count the weapon as having been purchased by you in its econ rating calculation. Presumably, this is to encourage players to buy weapons for teammates without having to worry about it affecting their stats. Waiting until the round starts to pick up the gun means that it’s treated like any other weapon dropped during the round.

While the impact of this exploit is indeterminate, there’s a good chance it affects MMR (matchmaking rating), and thus could artificially place players into matches beyond their skill level. This would cause a competitive disadvantage for that player’s teammates, potentially having a player on the team without the natural ability to compete with those who achieved a similar MMR through skill alone. Fortunately, a week and a half remain until the game’s official release, during which time this exploit can still be patched.
