It has been less than two weeks since the VALORANT closed beta began and so far the game looks promising to players of all skill levels. While much of the gameplay seems well developed, bans are a feature not present or planned to be added with any specific timeline, but it is something the game should definitely have when it comes to ranked mode and the esports scene that is sure to be created over time.

Players have come to expect some manner of bans in games with a drafting element for competitive play, and they exist in several formats depending on the title. Executive Producer Anna “SuperCakes” Donlon and Game Director Joe Ziegler spoke at length about the topic recently on April 9. “I think a lot of people have come to expect bans as a standard inside of draft games, or even ranked and things of that sort,” Zoe began, “For us, what we want to do is see first with the agents that we have, what kind of strategy are developed… I’m sure at some point we’re going to consider whether or not we need it.”

It should not surprise anyone that there are no bans or real talk of incorporating the feature into the beta in its present state, and this is because there are simply too few characters to justify such a move. For bans to be reasonable and make a meaningful impact, the roster would need to hit 15 or 20 different agents.

As for how to incorporate a ban, there are a few options based on the most popular games. The most common way to ban appears in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, where teams alternate in a double ban while drafting their respective teams. Overwatch has recently introduced their ban system featuring the hero pool.

In that system, the top played heroes are placed into a pool, with one from each role of Tank, Support, and two DPS. If a hero is played more than 10% of the time, they enter eligibility for banning, resulting in a rotation of bans on a regular basis. This so far seems like a great system for keeping the meta fresh and might serve is a great example for Riot Games to consider, once the roster is large enough.

On the other hand, a ban system might become more useful sooner rather than later to provide a way for players to deal with Agents who might be over-tweaked in their stats. This would also provide an unexpected benefit by forcing players to become proficient in at least two agents early in the life of the game.

In any case, bans are certainly on the minds of the developer, but it does not look like we will see them added to VALORANT any time soon.
