Valve has officially postponed Dota 2’s The International due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the developer announced yesterday. This would have been the tenth annual TI, with an expected multimillion-dollar prize pool on offer. The Battle Pass, which feeds the tournament’s prize pool, will still launch in-game.
“After extensive consideration of the global health emergency stemming from COVID-19, we have made the difficult choice to delay The International,” Valve states in their announcement. “We have been exploring various date possibilities, but it is likely that the event will need to happen in 2021.”
The International 2020 was originally scheduled to take place in Stockholm, Sweden, running from August 18-23rd. The event, like prior iterations, would have hosted 18 teams from across the globe. Twelve of the participating teams qualify from the Dota Pro Circuit, while the remaining six earn their spots through regional qualifiers.
The DPC has also taken a hit, as the ESL One Los Angeles Major was moved online and both the OGA PIT Minor and EPICENTER Major were outright cancelled. The fifth Minor and Major of the 2019-20 season are scheduled to take place in June, though both currently stand in jeopardy. Valve explains that they are working on restructuring the next Dota Pro Circuit season, which was expected to shift towards a regional league format after TI10.
The Battle Pass, which offers in-game rewards for those who purchase, will still be available this summer. The Battle Pass typically starts at $9.99, with upgraded options also available. 25% of sales go straight into The International’s prize pool, which reached $34 million in 2019. The Battle Pass will release later than usual due to pandemic-related logistics issues.
Valve states they will release more information regarding TI10 and the DPC as it becomes available.
