For someone who was the main protagonist for four seasons on the History Channel’s Vikings, Ragnar Lothbrok has committed some pretty horrific acts. His propensity for violence, lustful romances, and even at one point drug addiction, coupled with his deep sense of regret and longing for that which he has lost, brought about a ticking time bomb of bad behavior that even the most villainous dared not conceive of.

Ragnar was always a character that danced in the light and the dark. Perhaps that was what was so intriguing about his character, as no one ever knew which side he was truly on.

10 Ragnar Stole Lagertha From His Brother

In the story of how Ragnar wins the hand of Lagertha, it is stated that he had to kill a bear with a spear and strangle a dog that protected her. It is implied one of these animals is his brother Rollo, who, also, sought the hand of Lagertha.

It is even said within the show that Bjorn isn’t even Ragnar’s son but, instead, the son of Rollo. With Lagertha being unable to provide him with a second son, Ragnar loses interest, choosing Aslaug as his wife; however, unlike Ragnar, Rollo still seems to have strong feelings for Lagertha.

9 He Cheated On Both His Wives

Not only did Ragnar have the gall to cheat on Lagertha, a woman he truly cared about deep down, with Aslaug but to make matters worse, he tried to convince Lagertha to accept him marrying a second wife, instead of just apologizing for his infidelity.

Ragnar’s cheating ways never stopped during his marriage with Aslaug, as he consistently had many lovers over the course of the series and never seemed that guilty about doing so, at least, not until the very end of his life, where he gave Lagertha a half-hearted apology.

8 He Contemplated Killing Ivar As A Baby

It can be said that at least on this occasion, Ragnar changed his mind about murdering his infant son, who had a disability. Though, saying that he contemplated but didn’t go through with the wicked deed doesn’t necessarily place him among the ranks of sainthood.

Ragnar tried to reconcile this action in his mind, that he was sparing his son from ridicule, as living in a Viking settlement his inability to walk would hinder him from having the honor of being a warrior. In truth, it was Ragnar’s hubris that made him almost commit the unforgivable act.

7 He Refused To Help Lagertha Reclaim Her Earldom

After murdering her abusive husband, Sigvard Earl of Hedeby, Lagertha takes claims of his lands. Shortly afterward, she agrees to assist Ragnar in his campaign against Wessex. However, upon returning home, she finds that her second-in-command Kalf has usurped her lands, claiming for himself the title of Earl of Hedeby.

Lagertha asks for Ragnar’s help but after agreeing to meet with Kalf, Ragnar decides to stay neutral in the affair, refusing to help the same ally, that had just assisted him when he needed her most. Leaving Lagertha stranded with her usurper.

6 He Pretended To Be Dead, Letting His Loved Ones Mourn

A ruse only known to himself, Ragnar pretended to be a dead convert to Christianity, knowing full well that the Christians of Paris would accept his body to be buried with Christian rights.

Heartbroken, Lagertha and Floki proclaimed their love for him, mourning him in his casket. While his brother admitted his deep-seated jealousy for him. In the end, his fake death proved successful as the Vikings were finally able to infiltrate past Paris’ defenses. The only downside to his plan was the broken trust between him and his allies.

5 He Slaughtered King Horik’s Family

While, technically, King Horik did intend to do the same to Ragnar and his family, when he betrayed Ragnar and attempted to take over Kattegat under the false banner of a truce. It is still pretty reprehensible to murder Horik’s entire family, including little children for the crimes of their father.

It was clear that Ragnar intentionally intended on using this as a message to anyone who contemplated usurping his titles and lands. Though, it would have been nice, for once, to see Ragnar show compassion for the innocents in this instance.

4 Ragnar Tried To Murder His Brother

Yes, Rollo probably deserved everything that Ragnar did to him since he was the one who betrayed Ragnar on more than a few occasions but to gain recognition as one who has killed their kin, just seems like a reputation even Ragnar would not strive for.

With all that said, one can understand Rollo’s impulsive nature to overthrow his brother. Ragnar had stolen the woman he loved, raised Rollo’s son as his own, and gained widespread recognition and titles partly due to Rollo’s sword. So, Rollo’s betrayal wasn’t necessarily unwarranted

3 Drug-Crazed Ragnar Drowns Yidu

To some degree, we can all sympathize with Yidu, who was a slave in a foreign land just trying to survive. She pretended to be a shoulder Ragnar could cry on but, in reality, she was just his drug dealer.

So when Yidu threatened to expose the massacre in Wessex, a secret he had confided in her, along with her being out of the drug that had enslaved him, Ragnar saw little need for her continued existence and drowned her. If that wasn’t brutal enough, he did it as his sons watched from the cliffs.

2 Ragnar Abandoned His Titles & Family After His Defeat In Paris

One thing that is undeniable about Ragnar is that the only person he truly cares about is himself. He left Lagertha after she could no longer give him another son and he abandoned his second wife with her young children, along with abdicating his responsibilities as King of Kattegat after his humiliating defeat in Paris.

Rather than taking responsibility for his own disastrous life choices, he instead, chooses to believe the Norse Gods are responsible for his pain and failure. His inability to look within makes everyone else victims of his ego and expendable in his quest for glory.

1 He Created Unnecessary Daddy Issues With His Children

Ragnar was never in the running for father of the year but, at times, it seemed that he relished in the suffering of his children. Maybe he thought to abandon them would make them stronger but, all it did, was making many of them resentful. Only Bjorn and Ivar truly sought their father’s love and affection.

Ubbe, Hvitserk, and Sigurd all hated their father for abandoning not just them but their mother. Ragnar didn’t help the situation when he declared his children with Aslaug were weak and unworthy of succeeding him.
