Vikings: Floki’s Best (& Worst) Character Traits

Floki is a strange Viking – incredibly loyal, but entirely to his own ideals… so what does that mean for his personality?

Floki is one of the (extremely) few characters who manages to survive to the end of Vikings – and who gets a fitting end, too. In the early seasons, he is the boat builder, the semi-hermit who lives apart and would do anything for Ragnar. In the end, he is a semi-hermit, again, but living across the world, having lost everything over the years.

Fans love Floki for his quirks, for his way of looking at the world, and for his infectious giggle… as much as they hate him for his jealousy and his murder of Athelstan. These are far from his only stand out traits, though.

10 Best: Joyful

From the first moment that he appears, springing out of the trees to jokingly scare Bjorn and Ragnar, Loki is characterized by joy. He does have major mood swings, from time to time, but for the most part, he is thrilled to be alive. He takes pleasure in everything, from the trees and the celebrations at the great hall, to fighting in battle, to simply being with Ragnar. He laughs possibly more than any other character, and it makes him immediately lovable.

9 Worst: Distant

Much as Loki is known for his joy, when that joy passes, he can be plunged into truly dark and terrible moods. When this happens he becomes extremely distant, pulling away from even those that love him best. He avoids Helga, Ragnar, and everyone else in his life, allowing himself to sink into misery and despair.

8 Best: Creative

Floki is clearly a genius, especially when it comes to the things that he builds – and he builds a lot over the course of the series, most of which has never been seen in the world before.

From that first ship that took Ragnar and his men to England, to the great wooden towers they use to lay siege to Paris, to the treehouse where he finally finds peace, Floki is incredibly creative and talented in his work.

7 Best: Curious

Along with his joy in life, Floki has a sense of curiosity and wonder that make him a perfect match for Ragnar. His fascination with the world around him is wonderful to see, whether it is in him finding connection to the trees around him to his curiosity about Islam, when the Vikings first arrive in a new land. He is always seeking and exploring the world.

6 Worst: Vicious

Vikings Flokis Best (& Worst) Character Traits

While Floki may be a happy character, and one who is curious and loving to the important people in his own life, he can also be vicious. He is an incredible fighter, which is a positive trait for those on his side in battle, but his viciousness carries off the battlefield at times. He can be cruel with his words, and he holds grudges against those that ‘wrong’ him – sometimes for decades.

5 Best: Wise

He’s not perfect, of course, and Floki’s wisdom can definitely be clouded by his own prejudices or grudges, but he’s still one of the wiser vikings – especially by the finale. Even in the earlier seasons, though, Ragnar trusts his wisdom and he is a key player in negotiations with other rulers. His wisdom and intellect also help Ragnar in raids and in battle, as Floki can see how to win the advantage in a way that others may not be able to.

4 Worst: Fanatical

Definitely one of Floki’s worst traits is his religious fanaticism. He does have some curiosity around other religions (especially when he first encounters Islam), but he also has a passionate hatred of people of other faiths, especially Christians.

This hatred causes him to be unable to truly judge people on their merits, and causes him major issues when Ragnar starts questioning his faith.

3 Best: Perceptive

Unless his judgment is affected by his religious fanaticism, Floki usually sees things – and people – clearly. His faith impacted his ability to accurately judge Athelstan and Iceland, but beyond that, he is incredibly perceptive. He was able to connect to Ivar in a way that few others could, and could understand the needs and intentions of the people around him better than almost anyone else in the series.

2 Worst: Jealous & Possessive

Vikings Flokis Best (& Worst) Character Traits

The trait that may well be his worst, and that definitely caused the most issues for him in the show, is his jealousy and possessiveness. Interestingly enough, this is almost only shown when it comes to his relationship with Ragnar – with Helga, his friends, and even his boats, Floki seems to take a much more relaxed approach. But with Ragnar, he was wildly jealous of Athelstan, and this drove him to actually kill the viking-monk in the end. His jealousy and rage caused a rift between himself and Ragnar, too.

1 Best: Loyalty

The flip side of Floki’s jealousy is his loyalty. He may not often connect with other people, but when he does, it is clear that he is powerfully loyal to them. In Ragnar’s case, this loyalty saw Floki follow him to the ends of the earth (almost literally!), as well as working as a double agent for Ragnar against the treacherous Horik. No matter how wild and unrealistic Ragnar’s plans seemed to be, Floki could always be counted on to back him up, and he would clearly do anything for his friend. Of all the people in Ragnar’s life, Floki was one of the most loyal, right to the end.
