Though we’ve still got Fusion Strike on the way later this month, the Pokemon Company has announced the first major expansion of 2022 for the Pokemon Trading Card Game. It’s also introducing a brand new type of Pokemon, VSTAR.
Sword & Shield: Brilliant Stars will add four new VSTAR Pokemon to the game. Unlike V or VMAX Pokemon, VSTAR Pokemon have a unique VSTAR ability or attack that can only be used once in the entire game. Once you’ve used any Pokemon’s VSTAR ability, you can’t use any other for the remainder of the game. Like most other big, flashy Pokemon forms, once a VSTAR is knocked out, your opponent collects two Prize cards over the usual one.
So far, two VSTAR Pokemon have been confirmed: Arceus VSTAR has 280HP, and its VSTAR Power, Starbirth, lets you search for any two cards in your deck and put them into your hand. The other, Charizard VSTAR, can use its VSTAR power attack, Star Blaze, to deal a ludicrous 320 damage to a Pokemon.
VSTAR isn’t replacing the popular V and VMAX Pokemon, though. Brilliant Stars will feature 20 V and three VMAX cards, as well as the “Trainer Gallery”, a subset of 30 cards that will show Pokemon alongside famous trainers from throughout the series’ history. Some of these might be from the upcoming Japanese expansion VMAX Climax, which will include Bill and Eevee, Elesa and Flaafy, or Zekrom and N, or they might be entirely new cards instead.
One thing that hasn’t been confirmed to be returning are the battle styles that have been the connecting theme of this year’s expansion. Battle styles have been the connecting tissue of this year’s expansions, with the Battle Styles introducing two at the beginning of the year (Single Strike and Rapid Strike), and Fusion Strike introducing a third (Fusion Strike) at the very end.
Alongside Brilliant Stars, two new VSTAR Special Collections are being released in the first quarter of 2022 to help introduce the new mechanic. Continuing the trend of premium collections using the Eevee line, each one will feature one of the two Sinnoh Eeveelutions, Glaceon VSTAR and Leafeon VSTAR. Each will come with a V and VSTAR of their face Pokemon, an oversized promo VSTAR card, five booster packs from recent Sword & Shield expansions, and an acrylic VSTAR marker to track when you’ve used a VSTAR ability.
Sword & Shield: Brilliant Stars will launch on February 25, 2022. The Glaceon and Leafeon VSTAR Collections will launch at an unspecified date in Q1 2022.
