Warning: SPOILERS for WandaVision episode 3

Quicksilver and his Age of Ultron death are explicitly mentioned in WandaVision episode 3, setting up Scarlet Witch’s biggest mystery. Will her brother be the next Marvel hero to return from the dead? From the moment that Marvel Studios announced that Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) would star in a Disney+ show with her dead android lover Vision (Paul Bettany), it didn’t take long for speculation to turn to what this could mean for Pietro Maximoff’s return. Aaron Taylor-Johnson played the speedster in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was cut short.

When Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were revealed to be in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it seemed that both of them would be part of the MCU’s long-term future. They started as enemies of the Avengers but turned on Ultron to help the Avengers defeat the sentient robot in the end. However, the role of playing hero ultimately cost Pietro is life, as Quicksilver zipped across Sokovia to save Hawkeye and a boy from being killed by Ultron. His death is one of the earliest moments of trauma in Scarlet Witch’s life shown in the MCU.

With the entirety of WandaVision taking place somewhere where Vision is miraculously back alive, the common belief among fans and strongly hinted in the show is that Wanda created this new reality. However, if she brought her dead boyfriend back from the dead, why didn’t she do the same for Quicksilver? The first episodes of WandaVision didn’t even mention that Quicksilver existed, but that changed with episode 3. Wanda mentions that she had a twin brother named Pietro, and that’s where WandaVision really starts to get weird. “Geraldine” aka Monica Rambeau suddenly remembers who Pietro was and mentions that Ultron killed him. Is this mention of Quicksilver the beginning of WandaVision setting up his return from the dead too?

With Pietro finally mentioned, Scarlet Witch may soon be flooded with memories of her brother. Even if she tried to suppress such memories, the fact that she just gave birth to twins is sure to remind her of her twin brother – and that could even be before Tommy develops his super-speed powers. Seeing him as a sort of remanifestation of her dead brother could well be the catalyst for him playing a bigger part in Wanda’s psyche. If Wanda does have some control over the reality that helped bring Vision back to life and give them children, it won’t be too surprising if this means Quicksilver joins them to complete the new happy family.

Quicksilver coming back to the MCU in WandaVision opens up many possibilities should it happen. Aaron Taylor-Johnson insists he isn’t returning to the role anytime soon, but he could easily be lying to preserve Quicksilver’s surprise appearance. There have also been reports that Evan Peters has a secret role in WandaVision. Peters previously played Quicksilver in Fox’s X-Men franchise, so perhaps Quicksilver’s return won’t go exactly as Wanda plans. With the Disney+ show confirmed to set up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda could bring a version of her brother from another universe to the MCU. In any case, WandaVision’s interest in Scarlet Witch’s history and past trauma, coupled with this mention of Quicksilver, sure does make it seem like the speedster could appear before too long.
