The Squadron Supreme actually began as something of a gag in the comic books. The team was created by comic book writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema as a conscious pastiche of the main DC Comics superhero team, the Justice League.
Each of the original Squadron Supreme members, Hyperion, Nighthawk, Doctor Spectrum, Power Princess, and the Whizzer were modeled on Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and The Flash, respectively. Arcanna would join the team later, with her husband, Phil.

The Avengers are thrown by the existence of the Squadron Supreme because the members all closely resemble another super squad they’re familiar with: the Squadron Sinister.
This group of villains from Earth-616 appeared in 1969 as villains of the Avengers. These characters predated the debut of their alternate reality counterparts, and are the more direct analogs to the DC Justice League team that they’re based on. The ‘evil Justice League’ was meant as a little bit of an inside joke by Roy Thomas.
7 The Utopia Program
The Squadron Supreme would go on to play a role in the affairs of Earth-616, but a lot of their most important stories take place in other realities. Arcanna is on the roster during The Utopia Program, one of the most fascinating Squadron Supreme stories and perhaps one with the most potential connection to WandaVision.
In Earth-712, the Squadron Supreme institutes a program to create a utopia by assuming control of the United States government and also imposing behavioral modification on the population. This forced false reality bears some likeness to the strange reality glitching world of WandaVision.
6 Death of A Universe
The multiverse plays a major role in the history of the Squadron Supreme, which is why the allusions to Phil and Arcanna in WandaVision are so interesting. The team disbanded after the colossal failure of the Utopia Program. Not long after, they are forced to regroup to confront The Nth Man.
The Nth Man absorbs the cosmic energy of dimensions as he passes through them and ends up destroying the 712 universe. This leads to the Squadron Supreme being marooned in Earth-616, including Arcanna and Phil.
5 The Exiles
The Squadron Supreme is also connected to another major Marvel reality-hopping team, the Exiles. The comic book team features a cast of characters from across Marvel history, including Blink, who made her screen debut in Days Of Futures Past.
The Squadron Supreme faces off against the Exiles after the team arrives in a reconstituted Earth-712 and reveals that the new government there is secretly controlled by shadowy corporations.
4 Supreme Power
Marvel generally avoids total reboots in the comic books, unlike DC, which routinely reboots its continuity in major comic and now television events like Crisis On Infinite Earths.
With the Squadron Supreme, Marvel took a rare opportunity to completely revamp the team in the 2003 Marvel MAX series, Supreme Power. This more mature line of comics allowed for a more grown-up take on the characters, with most of the major details revised. The team now hails from Earth-31916.
3 Arcanna
Dottie’s ultimate role in WandaVision remains a mystery – it’s notable she is not on Jimmy Woo’s whiteboard – but the comics may give some clues. Arcanna was created by writer J. M. DeMatteis and artist Don Perlin and first appeared in The Defenders #112 in October of 1982.
She is a magician who during The Utopia Program storyline could magically conceal her pregnancy from the team, which bears strong similarities to the current events in WandaVision. Arcanna eventually retires to spend time with her family, which might be the case in the TV show as well.
2 Phillip Jones
Phil Jones is Arcanna’s husband in the comics and father of their children Katrina, Drusilla, Andrew, and Benjamin. He has no powers of his own. Phil was more or less a stay-at-home dad though he did get wrapped up in many of her adventures with the Squadron Supreme and was captured by the Institute of Evil.
It’s notable that none of their children appear in the television series and no children have at all, save for William and Thomas, despite the very pointed Westview mantra of everything being ‘for the children.’
1 Arcanna’s Power Upgrade
Arcanna was a strong magician early on in the comics, but with the reboot for Marvel Max, she got a serious power upgrade. The Arcanna Jones of Earth-31916 had the ability to perceive and influence parallel quantum dimensions.
This particular power has the most bearing on the events of WandaVision, especially as it’s understood that Wanda will appear in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.
