Warhammer is a franchise that keeps on producing games and Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate Daemonhunters is the latest, at least until Total War returns later this week. An upcoming turn-based tactical RPG set in Games Workshop’s grimdark science-fiction universe, it’s based on the 1998 title Warhammer 40,000 Chaosgate.

We were invited to take a look at a hands-off gameplay demo, as well as participate in a round table Q&A with Noah Decter-Jackson, CEO & creative director of Chaos Gate’s developer Complex Games.

Players will take control of the Grey Knights, an iconic 40k race of elite Space Marines. They are trapped on a run-down ship, which you’ll need to repair and restore. This ship also serves as a hub, with its Starmap offering missions which you’ll need to examine carefully.

Your task is to combat The Bloom, a toxic hazard corrupting worlds, environments, and their inhabitants. Since the Bloom is a living, growing threat, planets will become overwhelmed over time. This requires you to balance mission rewards and convenience against the time left before each area becomes unreachable. Allowing too many planets to become fully corrupted by The Bloom will end your game.

As well as missions, the ship is also the hub for the extensive range of customisation in the game. There is an in-depth character creation mode, where you can adjust facial features and skin tones, as well as options to adjust the skills, abilities, and load-outs of your marines.

Chaos Gate has an emphasis on melee combat, making everything feel grittier and more immersive, yet this doesn’t appear to restrict choices. The addition of psychic abilities keeps things interesting while still feeling like everything is at close quarters. There is also a range of weapons that you can combine with your unique skillset to help each Grey Knight feel distinct.

The turn-based combat system is perfect for bringing the tabletop game into a digital world and watching the combat interface feels like a full merging of the two mediums. We don’t know how the combat will feel at this point but it certainly looks promising. The attention to detail in the environments is noticeable and as soon as the dungeon was revealed it felt like a proper 40k dungeon.

My Warhammer 40k experience is mostly tabletop-based and this place truly felt like a recreation of the places those tabletop tiles represent. Combine this faithfully recreated design with the combat system that marks down lines to help you work out where you can go and what you can hit and it took me back more years than I’d care to count.

Chaos Gate has shiny green lines highlighting how the terrain will affect your moves, yet it still evokes memories of sitting at the dining table with a ruler arguing about if Space Marine X can hit Tyranid Y or if the edge of the homemade cardboard building is in the way. Back in those days, someone would inevitably decide to fire at the building to solve the issue, and in Chaos Gate that option is still on the table, just less literally. Your psychic abilities can be used to destroy and change the environment, enabling you to bury enemies under rocks, block the passage of enemies, and much more.

During the Q & A, the passion the creators have for the project really came across as they explained how in-depth the game’s options truly are. It was hard to take in all the information we saw but luckily the game has multiple difficulty levels, so mastering every little detail is unlikely to be essential. As someone who loves Warhammer 40k lore but lost too many times to her older brother in battle, this comes as a relief.

So far, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate Daemonhunters appears to be an engaging blend of tabletop spirit and classic tactical RPG mechanics and gameplay. It’s set to release on May 5, 2022.
