Since launching in early March, Call of Duty: Warzone has been a hit with players and boasts over fifty million downloads, though some players are noticing a major difference between platforms and the lack of a Field of View (FOV) slider on their consoles. The PC version of the game includes the feature, and there are major advantages to having the option, though there are a couple of reasons why some might still prefer a default setting as well.

Making it to the top of any competitive shooter, be it a battle royal or other tactical shooter, requires careful consideration of positioning and awareness of an environment, both of which are affected directly by the amount of information one has available to them. If all players shared the same default FOV setting, this would mean that all players have basically the same information, but that is not the case. On a PC, maximizing the FOV slider broadens the immediate viewpoint of a player, and they can see opponents, incoming flanks, or plan their own flanking maneuvers with greater ease.

Console players that do not have this feature must take the extra step of manually looking around to capture the same information, which takes more time and effort. In a game about split-second timing, the clear advantage goes to PC players, which seems counterintuitive since they already have an advantage of using a keyboard and mouse instead of a console controller, and crossplay is turned on by default.

This is not a minor issue either. There have been countless times when imminent danger approaches but members of the squad seem oblivious, and later confirm that on their console they did not even see a problem coming our way.

On the other hand, the counter-argument to not using an expanded FOV is that it can be more difficult to see enemies that are far away. While most of the action in Warzone takes place in the tight, cramped, close quarters of abandoned homes and hallways, some players might prefer the default view as they can see farther away. It would come down to preference, but the main point is that most other games can feature a sliding FOV on PC and console, and having the choice is what matters. Star Wars Battlefront II, Skyrim, Battlefield, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, and others do this quite well, and it is surprising to see Infinity Ward not add this in by default.
