Today, Warner Bros. premiered the first trailer for Detective Pikachu. It features the smooth-talking electric mouse, multiple Pokémon (including a rather angry Jigglypuff), and even a shot of a battle against a certain Fire-type starter Pokémon.

The trailer has a lot to unpack, and is definitely surreal. This is the first time photo-realistic Pokémon have appeared. The story centers around Tim Goodman, who is portrayed by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s Justice Smith. He wanted to be a Pokémon trainer in the past, but that dream did not come to be. Things get interesting when he runs into Detective Pikachu. For some reason, Tim can understand what the electric mouse says, whereas everyone else just hears “Pika Pika.” Pikachu states that he can help Tim find his father, which looks to be the primary story point of the film. Things will get grander however, as Warner’s description for the film states, “…they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.”

Of course, the true fun is seeing the various Pokémon rendered in photo-realistic fashion. They look, simply put, wonderful. Pikachu displays great emotion, and angry Jigglypuff is sure to give viewers a good chuckle. Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Psyduck, and more appear in the trailer. It isn’t all Kanto either, as Greninja from Generation VI also appears. It looks like a few Greninja will be chasing Pikachu at some point within the story. Charizard also appears, with the final shot of the trailer implying that Detective Pikachu will engage in a battle with the fire dragon.

The film’s setting is in Ryme City, and Pokémon exist alongside mankind as a normal occurrence. There are a number of intriguing details showing just how ingrained Pokémon are in this world. You can see a board with a picture of a missing Squirtle. During grumpy Jigglypuff’s scene, you can see a poster for what looks like a heavyweight fight between Machamp and Primeape. All in all, the trailer does a great job establishing the setting and tone for the movie. (If the song sounds familiar, it’s because it was also featured in the Super Smash Bros. N64 live action trailer.) It remains to be seen if the film has a good script to accompany the great visuals. For now, this looks to be a surprise hit of 2019.
