Aokana – Four Rhythms Across The Blue has finally released on the Nintendo Switch, but is it worth it? You can read our stellar review of the visual novel title here, or you can also watch the first 86 minutes of the game to give you an idea of what to expect in this sci-fi young adult story.

The Japanese adult visual novel game takes place in an alternate universe where flying has become possible and accessible for people thanks to the invention of Grav-Shoes. In Aokana, the player assumes the role of Masaya Hinata, a student at the Kunahama Institute. They will participate in four main plot lines that center around each of our four main female characters. Depending on the multiple options the player chooses, it will progress the story forward. With so many choices to pick in these scenarios, the game has multiple endings depending on how the player interacts in these scenes.

Nintendo Hall has put up a video on their YouTube channel showing the first 86 minutes of the game. The video gives the basic idea of how the game works as one must progress through the story by listening to the character’s dialogue and making decisions on what Masaya should do. Each of the scenarios is accompanied by some beautiful artwork that plays like an anime as you coach the four girls in the competitive sport of Flying Circus. Much of the game relies on building friendships with these characters in order to raise their team spirit when they compete.

Developed by Sprite, Aokana is the second game from the Japanese indie developer after the success of their debut title Love, Election, and Chocolate. Both games offer similar gameplay as it follows a branching plot line that determines the course of the game. They both also have a focus on the appeal of the main female characters through the actions of the player’s own character. The games tackle themes like friendship and coming-of-age that would resonate with young audiences and fans of the visual novel genre.

Aokana – Four Rhythms Across The Blue is available to purchase on the eShop.
