Valve has promised eager Deck pre-orders that the first wave of shipments should be delivered sometime this month, however, reports surfaced last weekend that several Seattle-area Steam Deck owners were getting their new handheld PCs a bit early. Several Reddit posts claimed Valve CEO Gabe Newell himself was hand-delivering Decks, much to the surprise and delight of those new Deck owners.

Gabe was reportedly showing up with camera crews, and now we know why. It turns out Valve was recording Gabe’s delivery runs to notify the world that the Deck is on its way courtesy of video game Santa.

Like Saint Nick himself, Gabe appeared at people’s doors with his full beard and portly appearance holding a boxed present. Well, it’s less of a gift and more like something that these people had paid money for, but the Santa comparisons are hard to ignore.

Gabe’s first delivery explained why he was hand-delivering the first Steam Decks, but he later stopped with the pleasantries and just said “Here’s your Deck.” This was likely due to the fact that Gabe Newell requires no introduction and being provided a Deck weeks earlier than expected was enough to get anyone to smile.

Provided the person answering the door was the one who’d ordered the Deck, that is. At least one person wasn’t home, leaving the one woman confused as to why there was a camera crew on her front lawn.

“Overall, this is bringing me back to my days as a Western Union telegram delivery boy,” Gabe revealed in the video. “We’re finally getting around to what we do best, which is interacting with our customers and improving the experience.”

Another neat tidbit we learned is that Gabe Newell apparently plays Final Fantasy 14 where he’s leveling up a White Mage. Who knew?

Sadly, if you live outside the Seattle area, you’ll have to wait for your Deck to be delivered in the mail later this month. Patience is a virtue and all that.
