Superhero movies have served as a fantastical form of escapism for decades. In the last couple of years, the DC and Marvel Universes have taken the world by storm with their superhero cartoons and comics. However, nothing has proven to be more successful than Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has dominated Hollywood for the last couple of decades.

While the public tends to associate superhero movies with the likes of the MCU or DCEU, some can’t really take to those movies. Some fans simply do not wish to have to watch years worth of movies for context and prefer their comic book movies to be more grounded in realism. Fortunately, there are plenty of other adaptations that have nothing to do with the MCU or DCEU that these comic book fans might want to check out.

10 30 Days Of Night (2007)

Plunged into weeks of complete darkness, a small Alaskan town must fight for their lives when they come under attack by a group of vicious vampires. Directed by David Slade, this vampire horror is based on a three-issue comic that was written by Steve Niles in 2002.

Niles went on to co-write the screenplay for the movie version, which starred Josh Hartnett. He also wrote the sequel comic series and corresponding film 30 Days Of Night: Dark Days.

9 Hellboy (2004)

Summoned from the depths of Hell to Earth, a gruff but goodhearted half-demon fights against the forces of evil. Originally created by Mike Mignola in the early 90s, Hellboy was pitched to DC but was eventually published independently by Dark Horse Comics.

Ron Perlman took on the role of the titular demon hero in 2004 in a film written and directed by monster movie legend Guillermo del Toro. The franchise was also rebooted in 2019, with David Harbour in the titular role.

8 Kick-Ass (2010)

What if the world needs a hero, but there are no superpowers in sight? Created by Mark Millar and published by Marvel’s Image Comics, Kick-Ass: The Dave Lizewski Years follows an average teenager determined to become a real-life superhero. While he manages to get his ‘dream’ underway, he soon finds that he is in over his head as he stumbles upon a dangerous crime syndicate.

Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong, and Chloë Grace Moretz, Kick-Ass is an action-packed black comedy that takes a new look at the superhero genre.

7 Snowpiercer (2013)

Years after Earth has been transformed into a frozen wasteland by a second Ice Age, people’s only hope for survival is to live aboard a perpetually moving train that circles the globe. The rich live in luxury, but for the poor, surviving does not mean thriving.

Originally a French graphic novel titled Le Transperceneige published in 1982, the thrilling, dystopian drama was adapted in 2013 in a film directed by Bong Joon-ho and starred Chris Evans.

6 The Losers (2010)

Double-crossed by their handler, an elite, special forces team, led by Franklin Clay, is forced to go deep undercover as they come up with a plan to take down the people that betrayed them.

Published by Vertigo Comics, The Losers ran from 2003 to 2006 before it came to an end. Four years later, it was adapted to film starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, and Chris Evans.

5 Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010)

A remarkably average part-time musician falls in love with the girl of his dreams. The only issue is, all of her exes seem to be determined to ruin their relationship, which leads to Scott challenging them to a series of epic battles.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was written and illustrated by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and was brought to the big screen by acclaimed director Edgar Wright. What results is an adventurous romantic comedy full of laughs, and video game-inspired fight sequences

4 Sin City (2005)

Sin City spins a tale of the violent corruption in the darkest depths of Basin City told from the separate points of view of its fateful residents. Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, and Frank Miller teamed up to bring this grisly neo-noir crime thriller to the big screen.

Known for highly praised works such as The Dark Knight Returns and 300, Frank Miller not only wrote the novels, but also co-directed the film, and its sequel A Dame To Kill For.

3 Cowboys And Aliens (2011)

The Old West and science fiction meet in this action flick starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. When aliens land in Arizona in 1873, the Earth’s only hope is a band of locals determined to protect their families and their land.

Originally pitched as a pure Western, publishers were not interested until they were teased with a new title that added aliens into the mix. It was finally released in 2006 when it was picked up by Platinum Studios.

2 Bloodshot (2020)

Killed in action, a U.S. Marine is brought back to life with advanced technology that gives him superhuman abilities. Bloodshot was first created in 1992 and published by Valiant Comics.

Though he was originally a hitman, the character was rebooted in 2012 as a super-soldier, and some of his story was changed. The sci-fi action film is meant to be the first in a series of superhero movies based on characters from Valiant Comics, and may even form its own universe similar to Marvel and DC.

1 Watchmen (2009)

Written by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Watchmen is set in an alternate version of 1985 when the course of American history was changed by groups of masked superheroes. The United States won the Vietnam War and Nixon was elected for a third term, but at what cost?

Published by DC Comics in the 1980s, it was adapted to film in 2009 by Zack Snyder. HBO later continued the story set years later with their limited mini-series in 2019.
