After months of rumors, speculation and leaks about the eighth mainline entry in the Resident Evil franchise being, quite possibly, the spookiest game in the series yet, Capcom finally confirmed much of that info with the official announcement of Resident Evil 8 during Sony’s Playstation 5 reveal event. So far, all that’s been confirmed is what’s included in that trailer in addition to some scant commentary by the developers on its contents. However, like many trailers, perceptive viewers have been able to gather some details about how the game will play. A video by Game Insider has handily compiled all of this information into a more-or-less comprehensive rundown of everything we now know about the contents of RE8.

As was rumored prior to its announcement, RE8 will return to the first-person perspective of protagonist Ethan Winters, first introduced in Resident Evil 7. While this choice gives the developers a chance to expand and improve upon the first-person mechanics introduced in 7, it also draws a clear line between the Remake series and new entries. A Resident Evil 4 remake would most likely retain the original game’s third-person perspective, just as the remakes of 2 and 3 did, while future games now include a clear delineating element.

Game Insider also cites developer commentary giving a rundown of its inventory system. RE7, like nearly all of the mainline games before it, included an inventory based on squares; small items would generally occupy one inventory square, and larger items two squares. RE8, however, will return to a system used in Resident Evil 4 in which larger items—namely guns—will take up grid-spanning space in a larger, briefcase-based inventory screen.

Like essentially all Resident Evil games before it, finding hidden emblems will be required to open locks on doors and other progress-hindering objects. One of these items even sports the red Umbrella Corporation logo. While a Resident Evil game not featuring Umbrella as its antagonists would amount to sacrilege, it’s nonetheless confirmation that the spooks in RE8’s village have ties to Umbrella’s experiments.

Finally, another minor detail mentioned by the developers is that the money gathered in-game is Romanian Leu, the present-day currency of Romania. This is, as of now, the only official confirmation that the game takes place in Romania, but given its prominently featured werewolves and other classic monsters, the setting feels wholly appropriate.
