Fans of Welcome to Plathville have been criticizing Kim and Barry Plath’s parenting choices since the very first episode, and some viewers consider them to be very manipulative. The show’s third season premiered on Aug. 17, and fans are still finding fault with Kim and Barry, whom they believe are breaking apart the family. If the premiere is any indication, there is a lot of family drama on the horizon in season three, especially between Kim, Barry, and Ethan Plath.
Welcome to Plathville was amusing to viewers at first, as the Plath family members shared their unconventional lifestyle, devoid of pop culture and taking place mostly on the isolated family farm. However, fans soon realized there was more to this family than just being unfamiliar with athletes like Tom Brady and popular superheroes like Spider-Man. Several of the older kids have shared how their strict upbringing left them unprepared for the real world. Plus, the rift between Welcome to Plathville’s Kim, Barry, and Ethan (their oldest son) is always growing.
In Welcome to Plathville season one, Kim and Barry shared that they felt Olivia Plath was a bad influence on the rest of their kids because she gave her husband Ethan his first can of Coke and exposed him to popular movies. By the second season, Micah Plath and Moriah Plath set off to live on their own after being told by Kim and Barry that they were also bad influences on the younger kids. During the season two finale, Ethan needed to choose between his family and his wife after he was told he could not see the children without his parents’ permission. This led to a family blowout that the parents caused.
Many fans feel that Ethan is being manipulated by his parents in an effort to get him back on the farm, away from Olivia and under their influence. Ethan from Welcome to Plathville called his mom sneaky in the season three trailer after she showed up uninvited to Olivia, Micah, and Moriah’s first concert. She was seemingly there to cause drama. That was similar to Barry showing up at Moriah’s workplace to crash her fitness class last season. Both times, the Plath parents said they were doing things to be involved with their kids’ lives. Plenty of viewers think their actions were more examples of manipulation.
Fans have also called out Kim and Barry for being hypocritical when they fully support Moriah’s PDA-filled romance with an older guy, Max Kallschmidt, but don’t support Ethan and Olivia’s marriage. Kim also insinuated that she would prefer arranged marriages for her children, so she could decide whether prospective spouses had lifestyles similar to hers. Many of Kim and Barry’s actions seem to be ways of controlling every aspect of the Plath kids’ lives rather than honest expressions of love. There is sure to be a lot more drama from the Plath parents during Welcome to Plathville season 3.
