Westworld, quite recently, finished its third season. And while it didn’t match the standards set by the first two seasons, there were still plenty of shocks and twists. Envisioned by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the series is based upon a futuristic theme park where robots are designed to help humans realize their true nature.
It’s a thriller drama that has a lot of interwoven storylines, all focused upon revealing what purpose each and every character is serving. It’s in the very nature of Westworld to surprise its fans. So, without further ado, here are the ten scenes (mostly involving blood) even fans didn’t see coming from the HBO original.
10 Rehoboam Reveal
After Dolores frees herself from the clutches of Westworld, she gets to know about Engerrand Serac and his AI Rehoboam. Little by little, the nature of Rehoboam is revealed. It is the world’s most advanced AI system (a quantum computer) that gives predictions based on the data it’s fed.
The biggest thing – Serac used Rehoboam to control what choices every single human being made, in order to reach the best possible outcome. The irony is, even outside Westworld, people didn’t have free will.
9 Stubbs Is A Host
That’s the beauty of Westworld, you never know who’s a host and who’s a human being. This alone provides ample shocks to the audiences and one of them is revealing the fact that Stubbs is a host, programmed to protect his kind, by none other than Ford. Bernard finds Stubbs in the place where Ford built him. He was shot in the neck and was still alive.
8 Charlotte Murders Elsie
This is a scene where Charlotte perfectly sums up her character – manipulative, deceptive, and can do anything in order to protect herself.
When Elsie confronts Charlotte about what’s really going on here in Westworld, Charlotte picks up a gun and in front of Bernard, she kills Elsie. It’s a really sad scene as Elsie didn’t do much wrong and was innocent. It really was heartbreaking.
7 William Kills His Daughter
William became so obsessed with Ford, Westworld, and finding the mystery surrounding Arnold, that he simply lost himself amidst the chaotic bloodbath. During one scene, when his daughter Emily tries to tell him that he doesn’t deserve to die here, William thinks that it is another one of Ford’s mind games.
He thinks Emily is a host and shoots her in the gut, therefore killing her. Then, he realizes that her daughter was, indeed, real and he continues to live with it.
6 Dolores Killed Arnold
Ford was designing this “Wyatt storyline” with Wyatt being the ultimate villain and the viewers thought that it was related to Teddy’s background story. But when the reveal happened, it left everyone shell shocked.
Wyatt was none other than Dolores, who, some while back, with the help of Teddy, murdered every host before killing Arnold and herself. It was an extreme step that Arnold took in order to stop Delos from converting his creations into some robots being used for fun.
5 Hale Is Dolores
When the Delos officials close in on Bernard and ask him about the encrypted key to all the information about the guests, he tries to remember things from his jogged memory. Then, it is revealed that after Charlotte Hale killed Elsie, Bernard had no choice but to bring back Dolores, to save his kind. Only this time, the host looked completely like Hale.
Dolores then killed the real Hale and took her place. When Bernard remembers this, right after that, Dolores (Hale) kills every single one of the Delos officials, leaving everyone watching awestruck.
4 The Man In Black Is William
When the viewers are first introduced to William, he seems like a kind man, who didn’t look at the hosts as robots, instead, he thought about them humanely. So, imagine the surprise when one of the bad guys in Westworld turns out to be William, only years older.
Turns out, Dolores always carried the memory of William with her and when she confronted The Man in Black, he told her that he is, in fact, William. He told her that she helped him realize who he truly was.
3 William Is Killed
As if the season 3 finale hadn’t given us a huge death already, Johnathon Nolan and Lisa Joy decided to give it another go. In the post-credits scene, William heads to the Delos site where hosts are manufactured. There, he meets Hale, one of Dolores’ copies, and she pulls the rabbit out of the hat.
A copy of The Man In Black, William’s Westworld persona, storms out and attacks the real William before slitting his throat and killing him. It seems Hale now has The Man In Black’s host to help her end humanity.
2 Dolores Kills Ford
Ford had a way of telling a story. One can even call it poetic, even though it involved death and misery. So, during Ford’s retirement speech, he talks about Westworld, his creations, and Arnold before Dolores comes from behind him and shoots him in the head.
Before this, Ford always seemed to have a fail-safe, just in case any host tried to kill him. And the viewers thought it would be the same this time but it turned out to be something else. It was an incredible way to end season 1.
1 Bernard Kills Theresa
No doubt, the most shocking moment in Westworld was Bernard being revealed as one of the hosts. When Theresa is almost successful in ending Ford’s dream about his last storyline, he instructs Bernard to bring her into an abandoned house inside Westworld.
Then, all of sudden, Theresa sees Bernard’s picture, with a robotic body. She is shell shocked and so is everyone watching. After that, Bernard is instructed by Ford to kill Theresa and he has no choice but to obey his master. In the saddest scene of the series, Bernard has to kill the one person he likes.
