YouTube has announced a new feature called Clips that allows users to easily select and share sections of videos and live streams. It’s been developed in response to requests from users over the past few years for a way to highlight “fun and interesting moments” on live streams. It’s functionality will likely also make it popular with users wanting to pull out the likes of memorable moments from movies and TV shows, valuable insights from talks and events, and gif-like snippets for sharing as reactions or general entertainment on social media.

There is already a way for users to share or embed YouTube videos to play from a certain point but it’s not possible to set an accompanying end-point. In addition, there’s no way to label or add a note to videos shared in this way within the YouTube ecosystem. At present, users need to download and edit a video one way or another to share a section from it and to do so with a specific title.

Shown off in a video on YouTube’s Creator Insider channel, Clips allow users to select between 5 and 60 seconds of a video or live stream and generate a unique URL for the video section stipulated, allowing just that section to be shared. It’s also possible to add a title that gives context to the Clip and why it has been created. Each Clip has its own special viewing page where it plays on loop and viewers can click to share it themselves or to watch the full video from which it is taken.

How To Create A YouTube Clip

Clips are currently only available for people to try on the announcement video for the feature and on all Creator Insider videos going forward. They won’t be made available for kids’ content, live streams without Digital Video Recorder (DVR) enabled, live streams over eight hours long, and premieres while they are live. YouTube says they are being tested with a small number of gaming creators first before being gradually rolled out more widely as feedback is received. To create a Clip where the feature is currently available or when it is more widely available, though, users need to look for the scissors icon between the downvote and share buttons in the toolbar below a video.

Clicking this button allows users to set the start and end points of a Clip either by typing in timestamps or using sliders. They are also required to add a title at this point. By clicking ‘Share Clip,’ they are then provided with a URL for their Clip, a button via which they can tweak and access the code for embedding the Clip, and a number of other social media sharing buttons. All the Clips users create are saved and are accessible via a Clips section that can be navigated to via the left-side menu on YouTube desktop or the Library section of the YouTube app. There, it’s also possible to delete Clips that have been created.
