The Mandalorian is now four episodes in, and even with the addition of former shock trooper Cara Dune, played by Gina Carano, Baby Yoda continues to steal the spotlight every minute that he’s onscreen. With Christmas just around the corner, the internet is buzzing with inquiries into the available Baby Yoda merchandise; however, Disney has not yet released any official “Baby Yoda”(officially designation still unknown) toys, and according to Hasbro, none will be available until 2020. In the meantime, fans are left to speculate as to what kinds of toys will be made available in the new year.

Disney is usually on the ball with its merchandising. The company offers an impressive assortment of official products: there’s a Disney gift for everyone on your Christmas list, whether it’s an office co-worker or your princess-loving niece. Baby Yoda was not included in the initial Hasbro Star Wars 2019 product line out of concern for possible leaks, as has happened with Star Wars toys in the past. Now that the proverbial cat is out of the bag, fans are speculating what Baby Yoda toys Hasbro may have in the pipeline for 2020. The answer to this query may lay in two places: the unofficial Baby Yoda products that are garnering attention online, and previous official Star Wars products of similarly adorable characters (namely Porgs and Ewoks).

While there are legitimate avenues to acquire Star Wars product that are not through the Hasbro licence, including some spectacular toys out of Japan, in the absence of Baby Yoda toys fans are instead buying out available Yoda plush products. It could be argued that Disney’s choice to keep the character secret for so long was a missed opportunity, and that The Mandalorian should have revealed Baby Yoda in preliminary marketing. The entertainment juggernaut has attempted to address the sudden demand by offering Baby Yoda merchandise through their online store; however, the collection of seemingly slapped-together T-shirts and mugs is a weak alternative to actual toys.

There’s an entire Baby Yoda black market that’s developed in the marketplace void. While poor-quality knock-off Disney toys can lead to inadvertently hilarious results, most media attention these days is on the number of independent artists crafting handmade Baby Yoda plush dolls, which are being sold through Etsy alongside a surprisingly-vast assortment of stickers, 3D printed figurines, and even Christmas ornaments. The bestselling products all emphasize the character’s child-like stature and large wide-set eyes. Likely, the official products will follow suit – especially the Baby Yoda Star Wars Funko Pop! figurine, which is bound to be among the company’s 2020 releases.

It’s safe to assume Disney will market Baby Yoda at least as strongly as it did Porgs, the other adorable Disney addition to the Star Wars universe. Disney’s online store currently lists 19 “Porgs” products, which range from the predictable items – plush toy, LEGO set, t-shirt, etc. – to the less-common official merchandise, like water bottles and lamps. The Hasbro website (US edition) lists 5 further toys, which includes a battery-powered “electronic plush” that “waves its arms” (wings?) and “chirps.” Baby Yoda will likely get a similar treatment; this time next year, an interactive Baby Yoda may be the hot toy desperate parents fight over and opportunists profit from.

Another potential source for speculation is Gizmo, the much-beloved Mogwai from the cult classic Gremlins. Although he hails from another property, Gizmo’s character design shares much in common with Baby Yoda, and it’s therefore reasonable to assume that toy makers will approach the characters similarly (coincidentally, Hasbro produced Gizmo stuffed animals in 1984, which are now highly-collectible). Both Gizmo and Baby Yoda are petite in stature, have enormous ears, large, luminous eyes, and adorably-stubby digits; the basic design lends itself to soft-bodied stuffed animals.

If history does repeat itself, and Baby Yoda develops the same cult following as his Gremlin counterpart, we will soon find ourselves inundated with soft, huggable, and undeniably-lovable, Baby Yoda toys.
