Classic Batman comics appear to be the inspiration for the Caped Crusader’s new Batmobile in The Batman. The movie’s take on the Batmobile was officially revealed in photos released by The Batman director Matt Reeves. Photos from Reeves provided shots from multiple angles of the new vehicle, allowing for an up-close and detailed look at the latest incarnation of the Batmobile.

Batman’s primary method of transportation gets a redesign with each new Batman reboot, just like the Dark Knight himself. The Batmobile is a constant when it comes to Batman movies, as every version of Bruce Wayne has to have a Batmobile. It’s a staple of the Batman comics that’s been around since Batman’s very first comic book appearance in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. The design of the Batmobile has evolved greatly over the years, though – in both the comics and the movies. In modern comics and films, the Batmobile is typically depicted as a sleek, heavily armored vehicle complete with all sorts of unique customizations and weaponry.

Like most versions of Batman, Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight will get his own Batmobile. The new Batmobile looks like a customized muscle car with a rear engine. Some fans are complaining that it doesn’t look like the traditional Batmobile, and though it’s true that it doesn’t look at all like any modern interpretation of the Batmobile, it doesn’t deviate from the comics. It actually bears a lot of similarities to older versions of the Batmobile, particularly the ones driven by Batman in the 1970s and 1980s comics, as well as some recent depictions.

One particular comic (above) seems to be the closest inspiration for this Batmobile: Batman The New Adventures #408 – the story in which Jason Todd, the second Robin, first appeared. The entire shape of the car in The Batman looks like the one from that iconic comic. Furthermore, the Batmobile could be taking cues from the recent Batman: Overdrive series, specifically the fact that the vehicle appears to be a muscle car, not to mention Batman: Noël, in which the Batmobile had similar rear fins that curve upward.

For the past few decades, the Batmobile has looked like a futuristic vehicle that might fit well in a science fiction movie. The modern Batmobile is so advanced and heavily armored that there are times when it’s more like a tank than an actual car. Batman has been driving bizarre, futuristic cars since the 1940s, so it’s not like this only started recently. That being said, there have been times when the comics went in a different direction with Batmobile. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Batmobile had a much more realistic design and looked more like a modified sports car. Batman comics began to move away from this look in the late 1980s.

Batman’s costume has Golden Age connections, but with the Batmobile at least, the upcoming movie is embracing the Bronze Age of Batman comics. The grounded approach that was taken in the 1970s and 1980s appears to be where The Batman is drawing its inspiration for Batman’s new car. It’s an interesting choice to be sure, and one that seems to going over well with fans of the DC Comics hero.
