Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) returned in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6, and here’s what the message he shared with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) said. Even though Boba Fett appeared to die in the Sarlacc pit in Return of the Jedi, the character made an ambiguous return in the season 2 premiere of The Mandalorian. Morrison took over the role after playing Jango Fett and the clones in the prequels, and his brief scene left many viewers wanting more.
Thanks to The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6, “The Tragedy”, Boba Fett returned in a big way. He shows up on Tython with Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) after tracking Din and Grogu aka Baby Yoda. Boba wants to reclaim his family’s armor but Din is hesitant to give it to someone who isn’t part of the creed. During the scrum of a battle with stormtroopers that follows, Boba takes the armor anyway. Before Din could ask for the armor back, Boba revealed the true origin of the armor and his father Jango Fett through a message.
Boba reveals that his chain code has been encoded in this Mandalorian armor for 25 years. He pulls up the code to show it to Din and prove that the armor belongs to him. But, the message includes a lot more information than simple proof the armor is Fett’s. It contains key details about the Fett family and their history. Although the entirety of the code can’t be known based on where the hologram cuts off, deciphering the message provides the following: “Foundling, Took into th…, The year, the…, Concord Dawn, Mentor Jaste…, Father Fett, Boba, Fett.”
This message is how Din learned that Jango Fett was a foundling, just like him. Jango’s ties to the Mandalorians were not previously confirmed, but he was largely viewed as a faux-Mandalorian. Star Wars: The Clone Wars saw the Prime Minister of Mandalore claim Jango was nothing more than a regular bounty hunter who acquired some of their armor, while George Lucas even believed that Jango and Boba were not real Mandalorians. The Mandalorian has now changed this understanding by having Jango adopted into the culture. This explains how Jango managed to acquire the famous Mandalorian armor worn by him and his son for decades.
Although the next few lines of the message are unfinished, they likely are tied to Jango being taken into Mandalorian order. The third line could even be the beginning of a reference to Jango’s involvement in the Mandalorian Civil Wars since Boba confirmed that was part of his father’s past in this episode. When the message gets clear again, the mention of Concord Dawn highlights the Outer Rim planet that is believed to be the homeworld of Jango. Of course, Boba isn’t from there technically as he is a clone of his father.
The last bit of information contained in the message before signaling the Fett’s ownership of the armor appears to be a reference to Jaster Mereel, who is a character from the old Expanded Universe materials with ties to Jango Fett. He is a fellow native of Concord Dawn and eventual leader of all Mandalorian clans known as the Mand’alor. But, the Civil War put Mereel at war with Death Watch, who attacked Jango’s father’s farm in one instance. Jango’s entire family dying in the attack, but Jaster saved him and raised the young Fett as his own son. Jaster was killed by Tor Vizla near the end of the war, with Jango then becoming the Mand’alor. Now that The Mandalorian appears to have made Jaster Mereel canon, perhaps more of his story will be explored at some point.
