While Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are, above all else, faithful recreations of the original Generation IV games from the mid-2000s, the developers still hid some secrets within the familiar Sinnoh region. One of these comes in the form of a new myth that can be found and read in Canalave Library titled “The Sea’s Legend.” In game, the story is said to have been “recently discovered,” distinguishing it from the other myths that were present in the original.

Of course, with another Pokémon game on the horizon, fans were hoping to see some sort of tease or reference to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, a game that’s also set in the Sinnoh region, though it takes place back when the land was called Hisui. While “The Sea’s Legend” itself is short and gives little in the way of hints for the main story or its titular Pokémon (whose role in the game remains a mystery), breaking down what it does say could provide some hints towards what’s in store when Pokémon Legends: Arceus launches next year.

What Is “The Sea’s Legend”?

“The Sea’s Legend” tells a brief (likely incomplete) story about a Pokémon living in the East Sea who was called the prince. A human is said to have searched for the prince alongside a Mantyke, Buizel and Quilfish, and hearing of their brave journey, the prince decided to meet them at the Seaside Hollow. The myth abruptly ends with no indication of what happens when the two meet, leading fans to predict that the answer will be found in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

It’s also important to note that there is currently no place known as the Seaside Hollow in either the Sinnoh region or the larger Pokémon world. As for the East Sea, that has only been mentioned in relation to the two different forms of Shellos and Gastrodon, which differ depending on where they are caught.

Who Is the Prince Mentioned in “The Sea’s Legend”?

As for the prince’s identity, the most likely candidate based on the few hints provided is Manaphy, a Mythical Pokémon first introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. In the movie Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea and the game Pokémon Ranger, Manaphy is referred to as “The Prince of the Sea,” and as a Mythical, it makes sense that it would be part of old Sinnoh region stories. Plus, Mantyke, Buizel and Quilfish all appeared in some capacity in Temple of the Sea, which actually served as Mantyke and Buizel’s onscreen debut.

While that royal title has never been mentioned in the main series games, Manaphy being the prince mentioned in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl makes the most sense. How it relates to Pokémon Legends: Arceus is impossible to say at this point, but it doesn’t really make sense for the developers to have added it for the remakes otherwise. Without a connection to the upcoming game, “The Sea’s Legend” seems like an unnecessarily vague allusion to a 15 year-old Pokémon movie — one that was actually part of the previous generation’s anime arc rather than that of Diamond and Pearl.

How Else Could This Connect to Pokémon Legends: Arceus?

Though there isn’t much to “The Sea’s Legend” on its own to indicate that it’s a tease for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it should be mentioned that those given early access to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were specifically told not the mention the contents of Canalave Library in their reviews. As this is the only next piece of text in that part of the game, it stands to reason that there’s something The Pokémon Company was hoping keep under wraps so fans could discover it on their own.

If nothing else, though, the story seems like a tease for a new Hisuian form of Qwilfish, one of the three Pokémon explicitly mentioned in the myth. While Buizel and Mantyke have already been spotted in trailers and gameplay footage revealed so far, Qwilfish has not yet been confirmed for the game. The fact that the story specifies this Qwilfish has “huge spikes” implies it doesn’t look like the Qwilfish fans were introduced to in Generation II.

Interestingly, the other two Pokémon mentioned have evolved forms, while Qwilfish currently does not. However, there’s precedent for Pokémon getting new evolved forms related to regional variants — including those like Qwilfish who previously had no evolutionary relatives — so it’s possible the three Pokémon who accompanied the brave trainer will all be able to evolve as part of their journeys.
