The ending of Santa Monica Studios’ 2018 title God of War set the foundation for future installments in the franchise and provides insight into what a new game could explore. Nothing official has been confirmed about a God of War 5, but the fact that the last game left the story writers a lot to work with implies a sequel has been in the cards for a while.

Given how God of War ended, it’s more than likely future installments will continue exploring Norse mythology. The ending of the game hinted that further games in the franchise would explore the adventures of Atreus as well as the onset of Ragnarök, the world-ending battle between Odin’s people and the mysterious giants.

Moreover, as the murals reveal that Atreus is actually Loki, this hints that players will likely meet Odin in future games. In some versions of Norse mythology, Odin adopts Loki after finding him as a child, so a new installment may reveal how this happens following Kratos’ death. This would also effectively explore how Atreus (aka Loki) becomes Thor’s adopted brother and would finally introduce Thor into the God of War universe after many references to him.

It would also make sense for Kratos and Odin to come face-to-face before his death, considering Odin will want to avenge the death of his sons. However, Odin and Thor may not be the only foes Kratos and Atreus must face. There’s a chance Freya will come back into the picture to seek her revenge for the death of Baldur. She’s also the former wife of Odin, setting even more precedence for both characters to return to the franchise.

It’s also reasonable to expect that all of the nine realms will be available in God of War’s next installment. In the 2018 game, only six of the realms were accessible – Midgard, Alfheim, Helheim, Jotunheim, Muspelheim, and Nilfheim. The other three, Asgard, Vanaheim, and Svartalfheim, were heavily referenced, thereby implying that they’ll likely play a role in future installments of the game. As such, it once again appears God of War will continue to explore Norse mythology through the adventures of Kratos and Atreus.
