What Happened In The Forgotten Lost Boys Sequels

The Lost Boys is one of the most beloved vampire movies, but many don’t know or ignore that it made way for two sequels, and here’s what they were about. The 1980s is considered one of, if not the most important decade in the history of the horror genre, as it saw many movies that went on to become classics or made way for franchises, as was the case of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street. This decade also saw a different type of vampire story in The Lost Boys, which reignited interest in these creatures.

Released in 1987 and directed by Joel Schumacher, The Lost Boys follows brothers Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam Emerson (Corey Haim), who along with their mother, Lucy (Dianne Weist), move to the town of Santa Clara, California, to live with their eccentric grandfather. Michael and Sam soon learn that the town is ruled by vampires, and they team up with vampire hunters Edgar (Corey Feldman) and Alan Frog (Jamison Newlander). The Lost Boys has a satisfying ending with Michael, Sam, and the Frog brothers defeating the vampires and killing their leader, who turned out to be Lucy’s date, Max (Edward Hermann).

The Lost Boys was a critical and commercial success and is credited with helping shift the depictions of vampires and bringing a more youthful touch to the vampire subgenre. The movie also made way for a franchise with two comic books, two sequels, and a remake in development. The Lost Boys sequels are not as well known as the original movie and definitely didn’t have the same success, as they arrived many years later and were unable to capture the same tone and essence. The first sequel, The Lost Boys: The Tribe, was released in 2008, and it saw Feldman back as Edgar Frog, with Haim making a cameo appearance right at the end.

Lost Boys: The Tribe focused on Chris (Tad Hilgenbrink) and Nicole Emerson (Autumn Reeser), two siblings who move to Luna Bay to live with their aunt after the death of their parents. The story follows the basic premise of the original movie, only now with Nicole becoming a victim of the vampires, so Chris is joined by Edgar on his quest to get rid of the vampires and save Nicole before she feeds and there’s no way back. Together, they defeat the leader of the vampires, Shane Powers (Angus Sutherland), and at the end of the movie, it’s revealed that Alan Frog became a vampire, and Sam was bitten by him.

The second sequel was Lost Boys: The Thirst, released in 2010, and once more with Corey Feldman as Edgar and Jamison Newlander back as Alan. Again, the main conflict is all about two siblings, one falling victim to the vampires. The Thirst introduces Gwen Lieber (Tanit Phoenix), a writer whose brother Peter (Felix Mosse) was kidnapped by vampires at a rave. Gwen asks Edgar for help to find and rescue Peter, and in turn, he asks his brother, Alan, now a half-vampire, for help. Together they go after a person known as “DJ X”, who distributes vials of a drug called “The Thirst” (which was actually vampire blood) among attendees at different raves. The Thirst has a twist in the third act as it’s revealed that Peter, not DJ X, is the alpha vampire, Gwen is his lover and not his sister, and she was tasked with bringing Edgar to him. Peter kills Gwen, and then Edgar kills Peter, returning the rest to normal, including Alan. At the end of the movie, Edgar’s friend Zoe is revealed to be a werewolf, and at one point in The Thirst, it’s also revealed that Edgar was forced to kill Sam.

The Lost Boys sequels don’t offer anything new to the original movie, as they basically retold its story with new characters, and The Thirst failed to add more modern touches to the mix. Fans of the original movie will have to wait for the remake to be released to see how much of it will be changed or even retconned, and if it will have any references to it or the sequels, though that seems unlikely given how unpopular they are.
