Here’s why Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) has been hailed as “the strongest Marvel hero” by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. In a Q&A at the New York Film Academy, Feige confirmed Wanda Maximoff as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most powerful character, ranking Scarlet Witch’s abilities above her fellow Avengers like Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Curiously, Feige’s claim that Scarlet Witch is the MCU’s top powerhouse means Wanda even supplants Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), who Feige previously declared was Marvel’s strongest hero.
Scarlet Witch was introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, along with her now-deceased twin brother Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Wanda received her powers from the Mind Stone; initially, Scarlet Witch could utilize telekinesis and plant psychic visions into people’s minds. Gradually, however, Wanda’s powers continued to expand far beyond being able to move things with her mind. She learned to manipulate her psionic energy, which allowed her to levitate, emit psychic energy blasts, and even cast force fields so that she could fight off members of the Black Order to save Vision (Paul Bettany) in Avengers: Infinity War. Her abilities shocked Okoye (Danai Gurira) when Wanda was able to destroy the Black Order’s massive vehicles during the Battle of Wakanda. Now, this could merely be Marvel’s head honcho savvily hyping up Scarlet Witch in anticipation of her starring role, alongside Vision, in Disney+’s upcoming WandaVision TV series (just like how Feige heralded Carol Danvers’ powers to make her seem extra special to coincide with Captain Marvel’s release). However, Feige knows that the MCU is heading in some intriguing new directions in Phase 4, such as exploring the Multiverse and alternate realities in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (where Scarlet Witch will also appear). With this in mind, Wanda Maximoff’s abilities indeed place her on another level beyond the other Avengers, including Captain Marvel, even though Danvers’ powers are also derived from an Infinity Stone (the Space Stone).
The title the “strongest Avenger” is something Thor clings to, but in Scarlet Witch’s case, “strongest” doesn’t refer to mere physical might. After all, Wanda will never win a bench press content against Thor, Hulk, or even Captain Marvel. Maximoff also doesn’t possess the sheer firepower found in the armored suits belonging to Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) or War Machine (Don Cheadle). In terms of what her powers allow her to do, however, Scarlet Witch does exceed her fellow Avengers’ abilities.
While Scarlet Witch’s powers can manifest in numerous physical ways — and she could have torn Thanos apart physically, according to Feige — Wanda’s true might is in how she can potentially affect reality itself, which is beyond Thor’s Asgardian lightning, Captain Marvel’s binary energy powers, and even what Vision did while fueled by the Mind Stone.
