For eight seasons, Michael C. Hall cemented his place in TV history as Dexter Morgan, and here’s everything he’s done since the show ended. Hall first gained fame playing David Fisher on the critically acclaimed HBO drama Six Feet Under, which ended in 2005. It was just one year later, in 2006, that Hall landed the Dexter role that would end up defining his career, at least so far. Dexter had its ups and downs to be sure, but Hall’s performance remained consistently good.
Dexter signed off in 2013 after 96 episodes starring Hall as the serial killer with a code. The eighth and final season remains one of the most contested in TV history, with some fans even asserting it was so bad as to ruin the whole series. This was especially true of the finale episode, which featured Dexter faking his own death and beginning a new life as a bearded lumberjack. However, that’s an extreme view, and most would argue that Dexter’s best seasons still make it a must-watch program.
Since its conclusion, there have been occasional rumblings of a Dexter revival, with Hall suggesting he’d be open to the prospect. In the meantime, here’s everything the multi-time Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actor has been up to since Dexter ended.
What Michael C. Hall Has Done Since Dexter Ended
Michael C. Hall’s first starring role post-Dexter came in the 2014 indie crime drama Cold in July, directed by Stake Land’s Jim Mickle. An adaptation of a book by author Joe R. Landsdale, Cold in July casts Hall as Richard Dane, a man who accidentally shoots and kills a burglar, only to run afoul of his dangerous father. In 2015, Hall voiced an alternate universe version of Batman in the animated DC film Justice League: Gods and Monsters, before moving on in 2016 to the critically acclaimed biopic Christine, about a news anchor who ultimately died by suicide on live TV. Hall played George, Christine’s colleague and crush.
Also in 2016, Hall appeared in the surreal indie docu-drama After Adderall, in which subject Stephen Elliott plays himself during the time his memoir was adapted into a movie starring James Franco. Moving on to 2017, Hall played President Richard Nixon’s White House counsel John Dean in the political biopic Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, starring Liam Neeson as the titular “Deep Throat” informant, and also played another real-life political figure, President John F. Kennedy on an episode of Netflix’s The Crown. To kick off 2018, Hall appeared as dangerous criminal The Bulgarian in the hit comedy Game Night, starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams.
Hall then starred in the eight-episode Netflix miniseries Safe, as a widower surgeon who uncovers dark secrets while searching for his missing teenage daughter. In 2019, Hall played another real-life person from the political realm, CIA lawyer Thomas Eastman in the fact-based drama The Report. Hall went on to voice the villainous character Toffee on Disney Channel’s Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and then appear as Holt in Jim Mickle’s Netflix sci-fi crime thriller In the Shadow of the Moon, brother-in-law to Boyd Holbrook’s main detective. Michael C. Hall is next set to appear in the crime thriller series Shadowplay, starring Taylor Kitsch as a cop who attempts to create a new police force in Berlin following World War II.
