What Pokémon Games Are Coming In 2021

As the new year begins, many Pokémon fans may be wondering what new games they can expect to see from Game Freak in 2021. Last year, players were given a mix of content to explore, including DLC expansions for Pokémon Sword and Shield, as well as the release of Pokémon Home, Pokémon Café Mix, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. While 2020 was busy for the Pokémon series, it appears the new year may be just as promising for fans.

Currently, there is widespread speculation regarding a potential remake of the 2006 main series games, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. While nothing has been confirmed by developers, leaks and rumors of a Diamond and Pearl remake have been consistently surfacing on the internet that point towards the games being a part of Game Freak’s 2021 lineup. If these Diamond and Pearl remakes are real and are anything like the remakes of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, then fans will have plenty to look forward to.

Fans of the older Pokémon games have a more concrete new release lined up, as The Pokémon Company released a teaser this past summer for a reboot of the Nintendo 64’s Pokémon Snap. This new game, New Pokémon Snap, does not have a set release date yet, but its mid-2020 announcement points to a Nintendo Switch release sometime in 2021. It’s not clear if the game is a true remake, a reimagining, or an entirely new title. The main gameplay loop of New Pokémon Snap appears to be the same as the original, however, with players traveling through habitats to capture images of Pokémon in the wild.

Pokémon Games That Could Be Coming In 2021

Another game potentially coming out this year is Pokémon Unite. The free-to-play MOBA will be playable on Switch, as well as iOS and Android devices. However, Pokémon Unite was met with disappointment when it was announced in summer 2020, likely because it doesn’t fall in line with other Pokémon games in the series and has the potential to be a mobile cash-trap full of microtransactions. Currently, there is no set release date for Pokémon Unite, and it remains to be seen if developers can sway fans into becoming excited for its launch.

Importantly, 2021 is Pokémon’s 25th anniversary. Game Freak will likely have plans to celebrate this in some way, so fans might at least get a few exciting surprise announcements this year. Coupled with what fans already know, Pokémon’s anniversary means 2021 could be a big year for the series, and hopefully more information on upcoming content will be released in the near future.
