What Pokémons Top 4 Most Popular Trading Cards Were In 2020

Multinational e-commerce website eBay reports that Pokémon trading cards topped the list of the most popular trading card categories of 2020, with basketball, baseball, and Magic: The Gathering cards falling in behind. The website saw a 142% surge in domestic sales of all trading cards compared to 2019. Here are the top four Pokémon trading cards of the previous year.

Based on Nintendo’s video game franchise and anime, Pokémon trading cards escalated 574% in sales from 2019 to 2020, denoting just how popular the collectible cards still are years after their mid-1990s debut. Although the cards have seen rises and falls throughout the years, factors contributing to this giant increase include the continuous releases of the main series games – with the most recent being Pokémon Sword & Shield – as well as the popular 2016 mobile game, Pokémon GO, which continues to add new content and Pokémon as the months go by. Streamers and content creators have also added to the hype with the unboxing of Pokémon cards.

Adults who loved the franchise as kids can now share their nostalgic interest with their own children – the target audience of The Pokémon Company. Additionally, 2021 is a very special year for the franchise as February 27th marks Pokémon’s 25th anniversary. This has likely added more fire to the series’ recent explosion in trading card sales, and is predicted to continue do so this year as well. The auction and shopping website eBay released its first-ever “State of Trading Cards” report, which highlights the top four most popular Pokémon trading cards of 2020.

Pokémon’s Top Four Trading Cards, According to eBay

According to the report, the top 2020 Pokémon trading cards feature familiar faces that date back to the franchise’s first video games, Pokémon Red & Blue. The most notable Pokémon card sold was a 1999 base 1st-edition holographic thick stamp shadowless Charizard, which sold for $350,100. Out of all eBay’s 2020 collectible card game sales, only the Gem Mint PSA 10 Alpha Black Lotus from Magic: The Gathering beat out the Charizard card, selling for $511,100.

Although the report doesn’t specify exactly which versions of Pokémon trading cards fall in after Charizard, it does list Pikachu as coming in second place for most popular Pokémon card sold. This could be due to generalizing a handful of highly sought-after Pikachu cards that have done very well in terms of sales. It makes sense for Pokémon’s mascot to rank so high, and two other beloved Pokémon – Mewtwo and Blastoise – come in third and fourth place respectively.

As Charizard and Blastoise are the faces of Pokémon Red & Blue, this also makes sense. Likewise, Mewtwo serves as the first major antagonistic Pokémon, is canonically considered one of the franchise’s strongest and rarest, and has appeared in many Pokémon titles to date. Charizard, Pikachu, Blastoise, and Mewtwo are widely recognized – even by non-Pokémon fans – worldwide. They have become staples of the Pokémon video games, anime, and of course trading card game, as demonstrated in eBay’s “State of Trading Cards” report.
