Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 has so far failed to give players any extra single-player downloadable story content, unlike the original game. However, thanks to the many characters of Red Dead Redemption 2 and given the various directions the developers could take any of their stories, it’s possible that a RDR2 single-player DLC could become a reality one day, even if it’s not likely.

The original Red Dead Redemption gave fans a variety of downloadable content after its release in 2010. Outlaws to the End, Legends and Killers, Liars and Cheats, and Hunting and Trading all released steadily following the game’s launch, adding new missions, mini-games, multiplayer modes, and collectibles to the world of Red Dead Redemption. The biggest DLC, Undead Nightmare, was also released in 2010. It allowed players to once again assume the role of (a slightly dead) John Marston as he searches for a cure to the zombie outbreak.

The variety of downloadable content kept Red Dead Redemption fans busy long after they played through the initial story, so many players likely had high hopes that even more expansive DLCs would be available after the debut of Red Dead Redemption 2. So far, Rockstar has chosen to focus on making enhancements to the game’s multiplayer mode rather than releasing any single-player story DLC for RDR2. But given all the options available, and all the places a new story-based RDR2 DLC could take players, it would be a shame if Rockstar never releases any downloadable story content for Red Dead Redemption 2.

RDR2 Story DLC Could Follow Other Gang Members

The DLCs for Red Dead Redemption provided players with more insight into the game’s NPCs and it would be good for RDR2’s story DLC to do the same. Even though the game did a good job of wrapping up important side character fates in the epilogue, a DLC could check in on what fan-favorite characters were up to between the events of Red Dead Redemption and RDR2. It could further explore the adventures of the Marston family as they try to lead a normal life on their own ranch, or the DLC could look at what Sadie Adler or Charles did after leaving the Marstons.

A DLC could also look at the events before RDR2. It could specifically provide more context into what Arthur or John’s lives were like before the prequel begins, including how they became associated with the Van der Lindes at such young ages. It’s mentioned in RDR2 that Arthur Morgan had a son with a waitress, but the two were ultimately killed by bandits. A DLC could explore his life as a family man and how losing them hardened him before RDR2 starts. A single-player story DLC for Red Dead Redemption 2 could even finally put players in the role of Dutch Van Der Linde himself, exploring what he did before founding the Van der Linde gang and then showing what the gang looked like at its initial stages.

One thing many players were expecting to see in Red Dead Redemption 2 was the inclusion of Mexico, largely because it was accessible in the first game. A DLC could expand the RDR2 map and open up Mexico to players. It could even explore what Javier did between RDR2 and RDR, since he somehow makes his way back to Mexico after the Van der Lindes disband, despite being wanted. Needless to say, there are countless directions a Red Dead Redemption 2 single-player story DLC could go, and given how well-received the prequel was, fans would likely be thrilled at any opportunity extend their gameplay even more.
