What RoboCop Is Doing In The Mortal Kombat Universe

One of Mortal Kombat 11’s new guest characters is RoboCop, but what is he doing there? Alex Murphy was originally a run-of-the-mill super cop who was just trying to do anything he could to make the world a safer place. One fateful night, a bust gone wrong puts Murphy face-to-face with some of Detroit’s worst criminals, who open fire on the cop and leave him for dead. Murphy is then saved and, after a series of intensive surgeries from Omni Consumer Products, is transformed into the superhuman, RoboCop.

RoboCop is one of the most recognizable action characters of all-time. The original film was an 80’s classic and helped spawn not only a franchise, but an entire brand. Outside of the film series, RoboCop has had its own television series, cartoon series, video games, comics, and collectible merchandise. The original film saw a reboot in 2014, but the remake was widely panned and plans for a follow up film were canceled. There are currently plans for a new RoboCop sequel based on the original film, that ignores the original sequels, TV series, and remake, but there hasn’t been any news about production since there was a change of directors over a year ago.

While the upcoming film may be stuck in purgatory for the time being, RoboCop recently appeared as a new bonus character in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, featuring the voice of the original RoboCop, Peter Weller. He joins the likes of the Terminator, the Joker, and Ash from Evil Dead as special guest character to be featured on the Mortal Kombat 11 roster. It’s worth wondering though, what is a robotic super cop from Detroit doing defending the realm against elder gods? Thankfully, his ending in Mortal Kombat 11 explains it all. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with Kurtwood Smith.

How RoboCop Entered The Mortal Kombat Universe

While on patrol one night, RoboCop discovers an arms deal going down between some old Detroit gangs and one of the most ruthless characters in the Mortal Kombat universe, Kano. Before RoboCop is able to apprehend Kano, he jumps through a portal into a different universe. RoboCop gives chase and is taken into the dimension of Kronika, Kano’s protector and the main villain of Mortal Kombat 11.

After defeating Kronika, RoboCop is transformed into a perfect version of himself that transcends his programming. It is then that he realizes the corruption of Omni Consumer Products, the company that saved his life and turned him into RoboCop. He realizes the OCP is playing both sides and making money by selling weapons to the police and criminals. It is then that he decides to go back to his own world, alongside the heroes of the other realm, and take down the OCP by force, ushering in the future of law enforcement.

Mortal Kombat does a good job of respecting the source material of RoboCop and create a realistic storyline to explain how the character wound up in an entirely different universe. Of course, the premise is a little ridiculous, but ridiculous is something RoboCop has always done pretty well. One of the nice things about RoboCop’s inclusion in Mortal Kombat 11 is that it gives the franchise an opportunity to get back to the gory, over-the-top violence from the original film that was heavily toned in subsequent sequels. This should be a good sign for RoboCop fans who are hoping the upcoming film can get the franchise bask to its roots.
