What To Expect From Darling In The Franxx Season 2

Will Hiro and Zero Two continue the battle against the VIRM in Darling In The Franxx season 2? Darling In The Franxx is a mecha anime series taking in place in a post-apocalyptic future, where adults and children are separated from one another. Creatures known as klaxosaurs have emerged from the Earth to wreck havoc and in response APE, the sinister organization leading what’s left of mankind, build mobile cities called Plantations.

These Plantations are protected by giant mechs called Franxx, which are piloted in pairs by children. The show follows one such pilot named Hiro, who volunteers to become the new partner – AKA “darling” – of the mysterious Zero Two after her co-pilot is killed. While the show bears a close resemblance to Neon Genesis Evangelion, Darling In The Franxx still received good reviews for its intriguing characters and fast-paced action. That said, many felt the story took a downward turn in the second half of the season and suffered from silly plot twists and a rushed pace.

Darling In The Franxx Season 2 Hasn’t Been Confirmed

What To Expect From Darling In The Franxx Season 2

While Darling In The Franxx season 2 hasn’t been confirmed yet there’s reason to believe it will happen. The first season was a collaboration between Studio Trigger (Persona 5: The Animation) and CloverWorks (Kill la Kill) and while it received mixed feedback – particularly over the finale – it was still a ratings success and won multiple awards.

Darling In The Franxx season 2 would likely be another joint venture between CloverWorks and Studio Trigger, so the possibility of another season could rest with how busy they are with other projects.

Darling In The Franxx Season 2 Release Date

What To Expect From Darling In The Franxx Season 2

Darling In The Franxx season 2 doesn’t have a release date set. It’s possible a second season is being developed and has yet to be announced, but given the amount of time it takes to produce a full season of anime, another series wouldn’t be ready until late 2020 at the earliest.

Darling In The Franxx Season 2 Story Details

Given the way the first season ended, a potential Darling The Franxx season 2 would probably have to start fresh. The finale ended with Hiro and Zero Two sacrificing themselves to destroy the alien hive mind VIRM’s homeworld and the klaxosaurs retreating back into the Earth. The survivors help rebuild the planet but the VIRM vow to return someday to create another mess. Hiro and Zero Two are also reincarnated a thousand years in the future and they meet each other again.

If Darling In The Franxx season 2 does happen, it would either have to be a prequel following different characters or pick up with the reincarnations of Zero Two and Hiro as they face a new threat or the re-emergence of the klaxosaurs. Since the finale proved disappointing to some viewers there’s a chance Darling In The Franxx season 2 won’t happen, but the success of the show make a follow-up entirely possible.

It’s pronounced Paw-rick, not Pad-raig. Now that’s out of the way, a brief introduction. Padraig has been writing about film online since 2012, when a friend asked if he’d like to contribute the occasional review or feature to their site. A part-time hobby soon blossomed into a career when he discovered he really loved writing about movies, TV and video games – he even (arguably) had a little bit of talent for it. He has written words for Den of Geek, Collider, The Irish Times and Screen Rant over the years, and can discuss anything from the MCU – where Hawkeye is clearly the best character – to the most obscure cult b-movie gem, and his hot takes often require heat resistant gloves to handle. He’s super modern too, so his favorite movies include Jaws, Die Hard, The Thing, Ghostbusters and Batman. He can be found as i_Padds on Twitter making bad puns.
