What To Expect From Kingdom Season 3

What’s the status of Kingdom season 3? The South Korean zombie series premiered on Netflix in January 2019 and immediately became a breakout hit. When season 2 debuted in March 2020, the storyline about a society-killing plague naturally resonated with audiences as they dealt with the real-world COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, the final episode ends with a major cliffhanger that will significantly expand the story.

Kingdom season 2 follows the Crown Prince of Joseon, Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon), who attempts to understand the origins of a zombie outbreak. After his father passes away, the King is brought to life by Queen Consort Cho (Kim Hye-jun) using a resurrection plant. Unfortunately, the flower includes a parasite that’s responsible for a rapidly-spreading plague. In the climax, a pack of zombies are killed after falling through ice, and the Crown Prince manages to survive the chaos. Meanwhile, the Queen pretends to give birth to a seemingly-legitimate heir, who is subsequently saved during a climactic battle after being bitten by a zombie. Kingdom season 2 then jumps ahead seven years for a couple of big reveals.

In the Kingdom season 2 finale, the Crown Prince fakes his death – at least in relation to history records – so that the Queen’s alleged son can become the rightful heir. When Chang and company set off on a recon mission in the north, they discover a mysterious woman who has been keeping zombies alive. They also learn the Chinese may be selling seeds from the resurrection plant; a potential plot to overthrow the King, which could be explored in Kingdom season 3.

Kingdom Season 3 Renewal

What To Expect From Kingdom Season 3

Netflix hasn’t officially ordered Kingdom season 3. Given that the first two seasons took well over a year to produce, it makes sense that new episodes haven’t been announced, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a serious worldwide problem. The South Korean show has been incredibly popular, so expect six new episodes to be released sometime in the near future.

Kingdom Season 3 Release Date Info

What To Expect From Kingdom Season 3

Kingdom season 3 could potentially release in 2021 if production has already been in the works. Netflix has been quiet about the series, but new episodes will presumably release by the end of the year 2021 or early 2022. As of now, it’s difficult to pinpoint an exact date, but Netflix has announced a special event episode that seems to confirm that season 3 will happen.

Kingdom Season 3 Story Details

What To Expect From Kingdom Season 3

If the first two seasons of Kingdom explain the what and where aspects of the zombie outbreak, then Kingdom season 3 will presumably explain the why. The Crown Prince has learned that a woman named Ashin (Jun Ji-hyun) has been keeping zombies alive, which raises questions about her intent and where she came from. Kingdom also reveals that the boy King actually has a parasite living inside him, which suggests that it’s able to mutate. The big questions remains: What are Ashin’s motivations?

Kingdom Spin-off Episode: Everything We Know

Ashin’s story will be revealed a Kingdom “sidequel” episode called “Kingdom: Ashin of the North.” Jun Ji-Hyun (also known as Gianna Jun) stars as the enigmatic woman, who could either be a native South Korean or possibly from another country. The new episode will explain her backstory, and how she connects to the plague. In November 2020, Netflix released an 18-second teaser which doesn’t include any big reveals, aside from the fact that “Kingdom: Ashin of the North” will release sometime in 2021.
