Scoob! was meant to be released theatrically on May 15, 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to shift to a VOD release on the same date, following the successful example of Trolls World Tour. Scoob! improves elements from the original cartoons while diminishing others. Some lifelong fans loved Scoob!’s new ideas while others hated them. While the movie does in fact struggle with its identity as a Scooby-Doo story and its desire to become a superhero franchise, what’s really certain is that it teases a variety of possible future installments that could range from an Avengers-like crossover event to a direct sequel more faithful to the original small-scale mysteries the cartoons are known for.

Scoob 2 hasn’t been announced yet, but despite the mixed reviews Scoob! received, its box office performance doesn’t rule out a sequel. After all, the film’s initial revenue on its opening weekend rivaled that of Trolls World Tour and remained in the top spots of rented releases for a few weeks. Although the final results pronounced Trolls 2 the winner, Scoob’s commercial reception still leaves the door open for a sequel that could fix the first movie’s most criticized aspects and exploit its potential as a step into the new generation of Scooby-Doo titles. Any title from the Hanna-Barbera franchise teased by Scoob! could follow the 2020 movie. Blue Falcon and his team played a big role in the first movie, but other interesting characters like Captain Caveman (Tracy Morgan), Dick Dastardly, Muttley (Billy West), and the Teen Angels – led by Dee Dee Skyes – also teased their extensive cartoon history in Scoob! Some other hints at the bigger universe appeared in the form of nods at other titles like The Flintstones and the ensemble cartoon Scooby’s All-Star Laff-A-Lympics. Additionally, Scoob’s 2D-animated end credits showed the first look at a multitude of classic Hanna-Barbera characters that didn’t appear in the movie. Notable examples are Atom Ant and Jabberjaw, with clues to Johnny Quest and The Jetsons.
Despite the absence of an official announcement about Scoob! 2, there’s still hope that a future movie can either return to Scooby-Doo’s roots or accomplish what the first movie attempted.
