FX’s What We Do In The Shadows continues to expand into new territory as its characters embark on their own dangerous missions, separately. As the show has progressed, the lore surrounding the Vampire species and their traditions have also grown and become even more complex.

Many of the inclusions into Vampire lore have been added for comedic purposes. However, true fans of the show should now have a metaphorical rulebook full of the different facts concerning the Vampires, the way their society operates, as well as some of the natural and physical elements associated with being a member of the undead.

Travel With Dirt From The Homeland

One of the useful elements of What We Do In The Shadows being presented as a mockumentary is that the intricate details of a Vampire’s life are actually explained thoroughly. For instance, when the team finally goes on a road trip, they have to bring with them dirt from their homeland.

Vampires are some of the scariest creatures in this fantasy universe because of those terrifying fangs, which Nandor and his crew rip out so that they can live normal lives.

The problem here is that the fangs actually regrow every single day, which means Nandor has to continue to pull his teeth out completely. A Vampire is therefore never without their weapons; even if one is captured they will continue to grow their most powerful tool no matter what.

The Transformation Is A Painful One

The process of turning into a Vampire has been documented a few times throughout the What We Do In The Shadows universe. It’s hardly a painless journey and involves weeks of torment before a Vampire can finally be unleashed to their full potential.

From the meandering growth of the teeth to extreme changes in a person’s temperature as well as a sudden shift in diet, the signs are quite obvious early on that something strange is happening. The bleeding from the eyes has to be one of the most gruesome traits of the process.

Regional And Global Vampiric Councils

The idea of the Vampiric Council was introduced as a way of governing Vampires across the world. It’s a crucial part of their society but doesn’t just operate on a global scale. There are also regional Councils as well, such as the Council in Staten Island that Nandor and Nadja oversee.

The Councils have sometimes been ignored in favor of community-run groups instead, but these unofficial gatherings have been destroyed before they can grow too powerful. There’s something ancient about a Vampiric Council which insists on following the outdated traditions of the ancestors.

Vampire Deaths Are Connected

There’s a rumor that if a Vampire is killed, all of those that were also turned into a Vampire by that individual will also perish. It’s a theory that scares the group in What We Do In The Shadows when the very first Vampire goes missing, putting everyone else in danger.

It’s also a rumor that has never been disproven. The side character known as The Baron was seemingly killed, having no effect on those he transformed. However, Guillermo and Laszlo revealed that Baron Afanas was still very much alive, beneath the dirt he was buried in, meaning there could be truth to the theory.

Decaying Over Time

Vampires can live for an incredibly long time and after a while, their bodies begin to decay. Strangely, that can have monstrous effects as a Vampire continues to mutate into something far from human and not even resembling the person they once were.

The Sire and The Baron are both great examples of this as is Petyr in the original What We Do In The Shadows film. These ancient beings hold great power within them and after a certain amount of time don’t seem concerned with their physical appearance, reverting to more predatorial behavior.

They Can’t Eat Any Human Food

One of the funniest running gags in this fictional universe is the notion that Vampires can’t eat human food, despite how good it tastes. Many Vampires genuinely miss being able to eat, but it causes violent vomiting and a gush of blood that is produced from the mouth.

It’s one of the many sacrifices of being a Vampire and while there are some who convince themselves that they are human and try to keep the food down, it has been proven to be absolutely impossible. Even the smallest bite can have dire consequences.

Immunity To Hypnosis

Not every Vampire is great at hypnosis it has to be said. While it takes a lot of skill and practice, the human mind can also be quite resistant to these powers of persuasion. There appear to be a few ways that someone can be immune to the gift of brainwashing.

Firstly someone would have to be supremely intelligent or powerful to be able to resist it. Secondly, someone might be so stupid that it doesn’t even register that they are being brainwashed. The final option is to have been exposed to it for a long period of time, building up a natural resistance much like Guillermo has.

A Super Slumber

Vampires can face a deep depression where they no longer understand the meaning of their eternal life. When this happens they retire to a Super Slumber where they could sleep for upwards of 300 years, as the world outside changes around them.

Nandor attempts to take a Super Slumber, which can apparently end if somebody simply wakes him up. Although he never gets to have that extremely long rest, plenty of Vampires have turned to this as a solution to their troubles before.

Vampiric Hybrids

It’s actually possible to cross together multiple magical species. It’s dangerous and a little odd, but there’s evidence that the likes of Werewolves and Vampires can co-exist. Nandor’s ex-girlfriend, Gail, is a perfect example of this.

She was initially scratched by a Werewolf turning her into one herself. However, when it seemed she was going to die Nandor took a bite out of her, also changing her into a Vampire. It’s a mixture that somehow works, although the bat-wolf transformation is quite horrific.
