What We Do In The Shadows season 3 finally reveals the Sire, the progenitor of all vampires, and the creature’s nature explains much about the mockumentary’s main and recurring characters. Famous for having unexpected guest stars and celebrity cameos, What We Do In The Shadows took a risk by casting the Sire as an animatronic giant bat-like monster with a demonically haunting voice, instead of a niche celeb. However, considering what the show has revealed about its vampires so far, the Sire’s overall look and characterization are very much on point.
The Sire, also known as Goëjlrm, is first acknowledged in What We Do In The Shadows season 3, episode 2, “The Cloak of Duplication.” The Guide gives the four vampires a tour of the Vampiric Council’s Chamber of Curiosities, in which the Sire is locked inside a windowless room. Later, in What We Do In The Shadows season 3, episode 6, “The Escape,” the Sire takes central stage as he escapes his prison. Even What We Do In The Shadows’ vampire hunter Guillermo was unsuccessful in trying to subdue the Sire. In the end, only the Baron, who could speak the Sire’s long-dead vampiric language, was able to calm the ancient vampire down.
What We Do In The Shadows’ “The Escape” also tackles the theory that vampires die when the vampire that sired them perishes, which is a widely held belief among most vampires. This is why the vampires panic when the Sire escapes. However, Laszlo concludes that since he and Nadja were sired by the Baron Afanas, then they would’ve also died when the Baron died back in season 1, if the theory is true. However, when Laszlo and Colin dig up the Baron’s grave to find him alive, the vampires realize that the lives of all vampires could depend on the Sire’s survival. Although this poses no threat to the energy vampire Colin Robinson, the life of the Sire could be directly tied to Laszlo, Nadja, Nandor, the Baron, the Guide, and all other traditional bloodsucking vampires. Fortunately, at the end of “The Escape,” they move the Sire into a nice house with the Baron Afanas, instead of keeping him locked inside his horrible prison in the Chamber of Curiosities.
What We Do In The Shadows reveals that although the Sire murders people for fresh blood, Goëjlrm is also just a simple, naked beast who is content with watching TV and hanging out with the Baron. This casualness and carefree attitude is in some way shared by every single vampire in the show, from the four main characters to the members of the Supreme Vampiric Council. This is a reference to how, at least in traditional vampiric lore, vampires can inherit the traits, abilities, and even behaviors of their sires.
What We Do In The Shadows season 3, episode 10, “The Portrait” is the last episode in which the Sire appears. However, considering how things ended in the season 3 finale, there’s room for the Sire to become a recurring character in What We Do In The Shadows season 4. The Sire of all vampires may not be what anyone expected, but he sure explains a whole lot about the undead.
