What Xbox Online Games Dont Require A Live Gold Subscription Now

Microsoft recently announced that, starting with certain Xbox Insider testers, free-to-play Xbox games will no longer require an Xbox Live Gold subscription to function, making them actually free to play on Xbox consoles. This requirement has been a sticking point against Xbox Live Gold’s offerings for a long while, and dropping the restriction will be one less difference between the Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5. However, for the end-user, this just means the option to forgo the Xbox Live Gold subscription and continue playing multiplayer in a host of free-to-play titles.

Back in the days of the Xbox 360, users had to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold to use streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. When the Xbox One released, Microsoft remained the sole outlier charging for access to services that already required their own subscriptions. Microsoft softened its stance and turned off video streaming’s Gold requirement in June 2014, but every type of online game still required the Gold subscription.

As free-to-play games became more and more prominent, players could enjoy games like Bungie’s online FPS Destiny 2 and the long-running Warframe without the need for an additional subscription on PC, Switch and PlayStation 4. However, players on Xbox needed to fork over the cash for a Live Gold sub, even if a game itself was free. Crossplay made this requirement even more bothersome, and it didn’t seem Microsoft was planning on relenting.

Which Free-To-Play Games Now Work Without Xbox Live Gold

All free-to-play games on Xbox are now truly free and don’t require an Xbox Live Gold subscription. The move is an effort by Microsoft to win back support following a recently attempted price hike for the Gold subscription. In January 2021, Microsoft announced Xbox Live Gold’s price was doubling, with $60 only netting six months of service. The decision was so unpopular that the company immediately reversed course and cancelled the price increase. In addition, the removal of the long-running Xbox Live Gold requirement for free games was set in motion that day. Now, popular games like Fortnite, Apex Legends and Brawlhalla, as well as all of the games listed below, will be available to all players, regardless of their Gold credentials.

With all of these games now free and the Xbox platform built around Game Pass, which lets users play more than 100 games for one subscription fee, perhaps Microsoft is planning to remove Xbox Live Gold from the equation entierly. The highest tier of Game Pass includes Xbox Live Gold, but the removal of the requirement to pay for online play altogether would likely be a win-win, delaying a possible Xbox Game Pass price increase and putting Xbox’s offerings ahead of Sony’s PlayStation Plus and Nintendo’s Switch Online. Both Xbox rival consoles once offered free online services to counter Microsoft’s Xbox Live but eventually transferred to a paid option. Now, if Gold continues to shrink into nothing, Xbox will be in a better position.
