What XCOM Game Is Best For New Players

There are few franchises in gaming that have as long a history as XCOM. The strategy/tactics series got its start in 1994, and, after disappearing for about 10 years, has returned with a vengeance. Since being rebooted in 2012, XCOM has added six new games to its arsenal. Having that many options can make jumping in on the series a bit intimidating.

The XCOM franchise is about humans fighting off an alien invasion. Outmatched and outgunned, the player must lead a rag-tag resistance against an overwhelming force – eventually collecting enough technology to turn to the tide. The mix of tactical battles and strategic overworld makes it an engrossing experience. There are some 70 types of aliens to fight in XCOM, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. That number of variables makes the game tactically engaging, but also dense in a way that can be difficult for new players to digest. It’s not as simple as starting with the newest game, either.

The latest release in the series, XCOM: Chimera Squad, is not the best place for new players to start – but only because it’s so different from the other games. It’s a departure from the usual XCOM fare which sees the player take control of a police squad staffed by aliens. Those alien squad members come fully-formed, removing a lot of the player customization that is a usual hallmark of the XCOM series. It also has a much smaller scale than the other entries, focusing on a single city instead of the globe-trotting invasions of past XCOM games. It’s by no means a bad experience, but is different enough from the usual fare that it’s difficult to see as anything other than a spinoff. It’s the perfect ‘second’ game for players to grab after playing through one of the larger offerings – especially as XCOM: Chimera Squad may be coming to more platforms soon.

XCOM: Where to Start

The reboot of the franchise, XCOM Enemy Unknown, released in 2012 and was met with high scores across the board. It was a fantastic revival of a dormant series. It brought the classic XCOM experience to a whole new audience, but at this point has been surpassed by its sequel. It’s a good game, but there is little reason to suggest it as a starting point for a new player.

XCOM 2 was well-received at launch, and it has only improved with age. Each new DLC has made the game better. With War of the Chosen, it has reached the pinnacle of what XCOM should be. The added player classes, items, and enemies, are all introduced through a reworked campaign, making it the perfect entry point for new players (or returning players looking for an excuse to replay these games). There are a few story beats that are carried over from Enemy Unknown that new players may not understand, but the gameplay is so superior that it’s worth it to jump straight to XCOM 2: War of the Chosen.
