Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wheel of Time season 1, episode 6.

The reference to Moiraine’s family in The Wheel of Time episode 6 sets up an important character for season 2. The direction of the story and the size of the cast in Robert Jordan’s books mean that the next season is sure to be packed with new additions. One in particular was teased by a new reveal about Moiraine (Rosamund Pike).

Wheel of Time was far from done with building its cast of characters when Moiraine and Lan (Daniel Henney) took a group of villagers out of the Two Rivers. Several more have been added to the mix since their departure. Key allies like Thom Merrilin (Alexandre Willaume) and Loial (Hammed Animashaun) joined up in episode 3 and episode 5 respectively, not to mention the various Aes Sedai that have been introduced. Most recently, Wheel of Time brought in Siuan Sanche (Sophie Okonedo), the leader of the Aes Sedai and the Amyrlin Seat.

The comment that Siuan made in Wheel of Time episode 6 about Moiraine’s “noble blood” and the mention of her last name, Damodred, are references to a major royal family in Wheel of Time’s world. In the books, Moiraine hails from House Damodred, the noble bloodline connected to the throne of a kingdom called Cairhien. Moiraine’s half-brother, Taringail, married the Queen of Andor and had a son named Galad, who was introduced as a young man toward the end of the first book, The Eye of the World. Sometime after that, Galad emerged as one of the principal characters of the Wheel of Time books. Looking at how he joined the story in the books and what’s to come in the future, chances are Galad will make his debut in Wheel of Time season 2.

Galad was one of a handful of major characters that crossed paths with Rand al’Thor during his stay at Caemlyn, with the others being Queen Morgase, Gawyn, Tallanvor, and most importantly, Elayne (a love interest to Rand and one of the books’ protagonists). When an accident landed Rand within the walls of the royal palace, the queen’s children – Gawyn and Elayne – tried to protect him, whereas her dutiful stepson Galad was quick to report him to the guards. As a result, Rand found himself in a great deal of trouble with the queen and her guardsmen. Since it’s been announced that Elayne is joining Wheel of Time season 2, it’s likely that this is when the show will adapt Rand’s trip to the palace. Considering that Galad is an important part of Elayne’s introduction and a fixture of the Andorian royal family, it makes sense that this is when Galad will show up.

Galad and the others came and went from Rand’s life in The Eye of the World, but all of them returned as major players in the various storylines that played out throughout the series. Galad, who has a reputation for always doing what he thinks is right regardless of the consequences, often involved himself in the adventures of Perrin, Nynaeve, and Egwene, and also embarked on his own journeys at times. Galad of House Damodred stands a chance at filling the same role in Amazon’s The Wheel of Time show.
