Denis Villeneuve’s Dune was released on HBO Max on October 22 — but when will it stop streaming and when will it return to the platform again? 2021’s Dune is the latest adaptation of the seminal 1965 social sci-fi Frank Herbert novel of the same name, a beloved book that has not only earned and maintained a dedicated following over the decades but has also directly influenced many successful franchises such as the Star Wars and Matrix movies. Apart from the creative pressure, this puts on Dune 2021, this also translates to big financial expectations for the studio, as the movie’s success will determine its time on both theaters and HBO Max. Fortunately, Dune has performed well in the box office.

In fact, Dune’s worldwide box office gross has passed $220 million. This means that Dune’s earnings has already gone past its production budget of $165 million. And considering how quickly Dune has earned this money globally, this also bodes well for the studio’s target of earning around $330 million worldwide, which it needs in order to recoup costs. However, for now, Dune has a limited time on HBO Max.

Dune’s last day on HBO Max will be November 22, 2021, its 31st day on the streaming platform. As for when Dune will stream again, this will likely happen in early to mid-2022 – congruent with how HBO Max treats successful releases. Despite Dune coming out to mixed reviews, the movie’s streaming success has far exceeded critical expectations. In fact, the opening weekend numbers for Dune are higher than Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max, which respectively garnered viewerships of around 1.9 million and 1.8 million U.S. households. This could mean that once Dune returns to HBO Max in 2022, it could stay on the platform indefinitely, just like the critically-acclaimed Snyder Cut re-release of Justice League in 2021. In comparison to these films, Mortal Kombat, which drew only 3.8 million households during opening weekend, took over three months to return to HBO Max (September 9) after it was removed from the platform on May 24. This means that it might only take one or two months before Dune streams on HBO Max again after November 22, 2021.

The return of Dune to streaming could also depend on the release of Dune: Part Two. Dune’s streaming performance also translates to sequel potential, and in fact, Warner Bros. has already set October 20, 2023 as the theatrical release date for Dune 2. After Dune returns to HBO Max sometime in 2022, it would help fill up theaters for the sequel if Dune stays on the platform indefinitely, which is likely what the streaming platform will do.

Dune has performed commercially well, especially considering that it’s a film adaptation of one of the densest and most beloved pieces of social sci-fi ever written in the history of literature, which puts it under a lot of pressure from both fans and the studio. Despite the sheer amount of creative and commercial pressure on the crew, Dune has paved the road for theatrical success in post-pandemic sci-fi cinema. And this means that not only will Dune return to HBO Max soon, it’s likely to stay there for a long time.
