When The Last of Us Part 2s Multiplayer Is Coming

Fans of The Last of Us 2 are over the moon now that the highly anticipated sequel has released, but there’s still a lot of speculation over if and when a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us 2 will become available. Considering The Last of Us had both a single-player story campaign and a multiplayer option, most gamers were expecting The Last of Us 2 to be the same.

The original The Last of Us offered a multiplayer mode through its Factions DLC collection bundle, which allows players to lead a group of survivors and compete with other factions for survival. Players can side with either the Fireflies or Hunters and use a combination of strategy and skill to make it out alive in the post-apocalyptic setting.

Players enjoyed the added gameplay experience The Last of Us’ DLC offered, leading many to wonder if a similar multiplayer mode will be available in The Last of Us 2. But that’s clearly not the case, as the game currently only allows gamers to play the single-player story mode. However, that doesn’t mean a multiplayer mode in The Last of Us: Part 2 is off the table completely.

What Naughty Dog Has Said About TLOU2’s Multiplayer

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us 2 released on June 19th for PlayStation 4, and there is no multiplayer mode available at launch. This isn’t surprising, given that the developers released a statement in 2019 saying the game will not have a single mode. From their statement, it appears both the breadth of the single-player campaign and the multiplayer mode became too great. Had they pursued both at the same time, it would’ve stretched their attention too thin and potentially compromised the quality of both modes.

“As we’ve stated, the single player campaign is by far and away the most ambitious project Naughty Dog has ever undertaken,” Naughty Dog’s statement read, which was released through their official Twitter account. “Likewise, as development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us Part I, the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Last of Us Part II would not include an online mode.”

However, players shouldn’t lose hope. Naughty Dog also stated that they want to introduce a multiplayer mode to The Last of Us 2 sometime in the future, though the date and even year still remains in the dark. “However, you will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambitions, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II. When and where it will be realized is still to be determined,” the statement explained. “But rest assured, we are as big a fan of Factions as the rest of our community and are excited to share more when it’s ready.”

So, unfortunately, the future of The Last of Us 2’s online multiplayer mode still remains unclear. While Naughty Dog seems committed to developing a multiplayer component for The Last of Us: Part 2, it’s anyone’s guess when it would be made available. The first DLC for The Last of Us was released nearly seven months after the original game launched, and given how well-received Factions was, it would be surprising to hear that Naughty Dog was not moving forward with a multiplayer mode. At the very least, promising that the multiplayer mode will drop sometime in the future means that The Last of Us 2 fans still have something to look forward to, even though the sequel has finally released. And, since Naughty Dog implied the multiplayer mode will be just as expansive and detailed as the single-story campaign, it may feel like an entirely separate game when it eventually drops. Until then, there will continue to be avid speculation about when The Last of Us 2’s multiplayer mode will finally become available.
