Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead features several robot zombies hidden throughout the film, with no explicit explanation offered for where they came from or why they’re in Las Vegas. As a result, several popular theories have arisen to explain the curious presence of the robotic undead, any of which could play into the various upcoming Army of the Dead spinoffs. Going just off the information that’s provided in the film itself, the robot zombies could mean a few different things.

Though the core story of Army of the Dead isn’t terribly complicated, and in fact functions mostly by invoking classic tropes of the zombie and heist genres, there’s a bit more going on beneath the surface. The origin of the zombies, their communal nature, and their ability to breed, for instance, are all touched on briefly, but the film ends with a lot more questions than answers. Presumably, some of those mysterious will be addressed in the upcoming prequels Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and Army of Thieves.

The robot zombies add another layer of intrigue to Army of the Dead. They’re never discussed by any of the characters, and they appear so briefly that they’re easy to miss. While the robots serve largely as fun Easter eggs for eagle-eyed viewers, they may have a much more significant role in the overall story going forward. Army Of The Dead’s Robot Zombies Are A Government Experiment

Army of the Dead makes it clear that the U.S. government has, at the very least, a vested curiosity in the Las Vegas undead. Zeus, the alpha zombie who escapes from Area 51 at the beginning of the film, is being transported by U.S. soldiers from a top-secret U.S. military base. Clearly, the government is involved in the virus. That could just mean that the military apprehended Zeus and were conducting research on him, or it could mean that the entire virus was manufactured within Area 51 itself. As of now, there’s no way to know for sure.

What is clear is that the government is very interested in the zombies, and particularly in their potential military applications. It’s possible then that the robot zombies spotted in Vegas are actually government experiments, created to somehow emulate or infiltrate the true undead. The robots’ blue eyes evoke the blue blood of the alphas, which could suggest the U.S. military was trying to create fake alphas in an attempt to bring the real horde under their control. If that’s the case, of course, it would seem that the experiment was a failure.

Army Of The Dead’s Robot Zombies Are Spying On The Alphas

Another explanation for the robot zombies is that were created by the government solely to spy on and examine the rest of the undead. This theory is perhaps a bit more believable, as observing and researching the zombies would be a much simpler task than trying to control them. The robot zombies don’t appear to be particularly strong, so it would make more sense if they were actually sent as mobile security cameras to document and study the behaviors of the undead.

In particular, the robots could have been sent to spy on Zeus and the rest of the alphas. Since Zeus was the one formerly in captivity, the government’s interest is likely tied to him. The alphas’ heightened intelligence, leadership skills, and ability to breed with one another are all curious, and they’d certainly justify the research budget necessary to create some believable fake zombies.

Army Of The Dead’s Robot Zombies Were Sent By Aliens

There are numerous hints throughout Army of the Dead that the zombies are alien. The opening sequence features multiple UFOs hidden in background shots, the Area 51 connection suggests an extraterrestrial origin to the virus, and the nature and odd biology of the Alphas seems far more complicated than simple reanimation. Some have theorized that the virus was sent from space as a weapon to conquer Earth. Others have supposed that the infection was at least caused unintentionally by some intervention from space – a twist that would harken back to George A. Romero’s original Night of the Living Dead.

It’s possible, then, that the robot zombies in Army of the Dead aren’t manmade at all. Rather, they could be instances of alien technology, sent either to keep tabs on the undead or to bolster their ranks. Perhaps the alien conquerors who sent the virus also supplied a few robo-shamblers to ensure the infection spread smoothly. Or maybe the virus’s arrival on Earth was an accident, and the robots were sent after to research and monitor the situation. Either way, the robot zombies in Army of the Dead look a bit too advanced for modern real-world technology, and while that could be explained with secret U.S. government tech, it could just as easily suggest the robots were made by aliens.

Army Of The Dead’s Robot Zombies Could Be Part Of The Time Loop

One last theory of how Army of the Dead’s robot zombies fit into the overall story is the time loop theory. In the movie, there’s a scene where Omari Hardwick’s Vanderohe character wonders aloud if the dead bodies the crew finds at the vault are in fact them from another time, and if they might all be stuck in some grand time loop, doomed to repeat their actions over and over again. It’s clearly not meant to be taking too seriously, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t clues throughout the film that could be used to support such a theory.

Assuming for the moment that the time loop theory is correct, the robot zombies could be connected to it somehow. Perhaps they’re impervious to the looping effect, and are therefore meant to observe each successive circuit. That means either the government experiment or alien theories could still be true in this instance. In fact, the alien theory might be the best explanation available of how a time loop would actually work in Army of the Dead. Perhaps extraterrestrial overlords are looping the same outbreak again and again, all in a sick experiment to gain new data and refine their zombie virus. Or maybe the robot zombies in Army of the Dead are nothing more than fun Easter eggs, and these theories will be proven untrue. Who’s to say?
