Leveling up is likely on every World of Warcraft player’s mind since the Shadowlands expansion introduced the level squish. Players can now only reach the max level cap at Level 60. Players will naturally level up by fighting enemies and progressing the main story of Shadowlands, but there are other ways for players to enhance gameplay and level their characters, including choosing and leveling up a profession or two. Professions are essentially a World of Warcraft character’s job in the expansion, and some of these can help players earn XP from gathering valuable resources and make a bit of quick cash. Every profession received a sizeable update in the Shadowlands expansion, with new recipes and a new legendary crafting system.
Players can have two professions at a time, and many of the available professions often work together in pairs. Because players who change professions will lose all the progress from their original profession, most choose to take on and keep a profession throughout the course of the expansion. In Shadowlands, players will need to progress the main story and make it to Oribos, the main hub city, to find and begin their professions. Where To Find Professions in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands
At the start of the Shadowlands expansion, players will be in either Ogrimmar or Stormwind City. They’ll need to follow the quest progression through The Maw, then head to Oribos.
Oribos contains three floors, accessed via a wispy portal near its center. This portal will take players between The Ring of Fates and The Ring of Transference. Players want to head to The Ring of Fates to start their professions.
To begin a profession, players are going to need to find a profession-trainer NPC for that job. All the trainers for the various professions in Shadowlands are concentrated in the northwest hall of The Ring of Fates, called The Hall of Shapes. This is the first room on the left once players exit the portal. The room has a blue hammer above the door. Once inside, players can either go straight ahead or down the left side of the hall first to sample the different options.
The available professions in Shadowlands and their associated trainers are:
- Alchemy: Elixirist Au’pyr
- Blacksmithing: Smith Au’berk
- Cooking: Chef Au’krut
- Enchanting: Imbuer Au’vresh
- Engineering: Machinist Au’gur
- Fishing: Retriever Au’prin
- Herbalism: Selector Au’mar
- Inscription: Scribe Au’tehshi
- Jewelcrafting: Appraiser Au’vesk
- Leatherworking: Tanner Au’qil
- Mining: Excavationist Au’fer
- Skinning: Flayer Au’khem
- Tailoring: Stitcher Au’phes
Unfortunately, players will need to say goodbye to the Archaeology profession, as it did not receive an update for Shadowlands.
Players should be strategic about pairing their professions. It’s often a good idea to choose one gathering profession to supply ingredients, and one crafting profession to transform ingredients into consumables. If players are unsure which professions they want, they could begin with gathering professions like mining and herbalism. Each time a player collects a resource, they earn some XP, and they can earn a little money selling what they find at the Auction House until they decide on a more permanent profession.
Professions that pair well together include Herbalism and Alchemy, Skinning and Leatherworking or Tailoring, and Mining with Blacksmithing, Engineering, or Jewelcrafting. Players may also want to look into Enchanting and Inscription, which appear to have some major perks in the expansion. Scribes can craft missives that determine the stats of legendary crafted items, and Armor Enchants have returned.
