Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s Soothe Bell makes increasing friendship with a Pokémon significantly easier for trainers hoping to build bonds quickly. Like most Pokémon games, friendship is an important mechanic in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. The bonds that Pokémon build with their trainers allow them to land critical hits more easily, withstand knock-out hits, and heal their status conditions. Not only does it give players an advantage in battle, but friendship with Pokémon is required to obtain certain Ribbons and items in the game, like the Best Friends Ribbon. Additionally, some species of Pokémon will only evolve with a high enough friendship level, including Pikachu, Clefairy, and Snorlax.

Trainers can increase their friendship with a Pokémon by battling, walking together, and feeding Poffins or vitamins. Pokémon can even gain friendship by getting a massage once per day from a girl in Veilstone City in the house near Veilstone Gym, where trainers fight Maylene. But, there are also several ways trainers can cause their Pokémon’s friendship to decrease, like giving them foul-tasting herbal medicines or allowing them to faint in battle.

However, trainers can make their Pokémon gain friendship much faster by giving them a Soothe Bell to hold. Unfortunately, there’s only one Soothe Bell in the Sinnoh region, so trainers hoping to increase the friendship levels of several different Pokémon will have to have them take turns or focus on one Pokémon at a time. Fortunately, even though there’s only one, the Soothe Bell is an easy item to acquire once players can access Mr. Backlot’s Pokémon Mansion after beating the Eterna Gym.

Pokémon BDSP: How To Get The Soothe Bell

Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s Pokémon Mansion is on the right-hand side of Route 212, just south of Hearthome City. The Pokémon Mansion is home to the Trophy Garden, where players can find a number of rare Pokémon and several items as well. For example, to get the Soothe Bell, trainers must visit the second room in the left-wing of the Pokémon Mansion and speak with the maid inside. She’ll give them the Soothe Bell, which can be used from the Other Items Pocket of the Bag.

Any Pokémon can hold the Soothe Bell in the party to increase the rate of its friendship gain. Trainers can give this item to a Pokémon by selecting it in the Bag or selecting one of the Pokémon in their party and selecting “Held Item.” Pokémon holding the Soothe Bell will gain friendship 50% faster, making it one of the most efficient methods of increasing friendship in the game.

Trainers can check how high their friendship level is with each party Pokémon by using the Friendship Checker app on the Pokétch. Pokémon with a higher friendship level will move closer to the player’s hand, and Pokémon with a lower friendship level will move away. As their friendship level increases, bigger hearts will come off the Pokémon when it reaches the player’s hand.
