It might be set in Chicago, but where was Bad Moms filmed? Written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, Bad Moms is a 2016 female-focused comedy following a trio of overworked and under-appreciated moms who are pushed to their limits and decide to let loose. Mila Kunis heads up the Bad Moms cast as Amy – a career woman and mother of two struggling to balance all her responsibilities – while Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell play Carla and Kiki, her two new-found friends. The three moms bond over their shared woes and mutual hatred of PTA president and seemingly perfect mother Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate).
Bad Moms was followed by a festive sequel – befittingly titled A Bad Moms Christmas – in 2017. The holiday movie picks up with Amy, Carla and Kiki at Christmastime as they’re visited by their own moms – the overly critical Ruth (Christine Baranski), free-spirited freeloader Isis (Susan Sarandon) and the overbearing Sandy (Cheryl Hines) – and follows the drama that ensues as the mother-daughter duos come to blows over the festive period.
Both the original movie and its sequel are set in the suburbs of Chicago, but where was Bad Moms actually filmed? While some exterior scenes were shot in Chicago, the majority of the movie was filmed on location in New Orleans. Ursuline Academy stood in for the fictional William McKinley Middle School that the moms’ kids attend, while the Bad Moms scenes set at soccer practice and a PTA luncheon were filmed at Tulane University’s Brown Field and Cudd Hall respectively.
In the movie, Mila Kunis’ character Amy works at a hip artisanal coffee cooperative and scenes set at the company were filmed at New Orleans’ Contemporary Arts Center. One particularly memorable Bad Moms scene sees Amy, Carla and Kiki go wild in a grocery store to the tune of Icona Pop’s “I Love It” and was filmed at the now-closed Breaux Mart branch in Gretna, Louisiana. Another scene sees the moms take in a movie (which seems to be a space-set romantic drama starring a topless Colin Egglesfield of All My Children fame) which was shot at New Orleans’ historic Prytania Theatre.
Although neither Bad Moms nor A Bad Moms Christmas particularly impressed critics, they were box office hits and fans of the budding franchise are in luck. Last year, a third movie was announced that will see Christine Baranski, Susan Sarandon and Cheryl Hines reprise their roles from A Bad Moms Christmas. Titled Bad Moms’ Moms, the second sequel is currently in pre-production.
