12 Aries: Albert Rosenfield

For all of its murder and atrocity, Twin Peaks fans know it is to some degree a heart-warming series. This veneer is threatened temporarily when cynical FBI man Albert Rosenfield comes to town and butts heads with the venerable Sherriff Harry Truman but then doubled down on when the two voice mutual respect. As Rosenfield puts it: “I love you, Sherriff Truman”.

Agent Rosenfield is a darned professional. He approaches his position as the autopsy expert of crime in the only way possible, with stoic professionalism. As Truman learned, this commitment to the task at hand is a coping mechanism, but for both excellence and coping it works.

11 Taurus: Leto Atreides

Existing in a bastion of prosperity among a crumbling world, Leto Atreides maintains an unstable life of relative leisure as he awaits the prophesied development of his son Paul. He deserves credit, however. Duke Leto understands his role within the grand scheme and is sure to prepare Paul, both mentally and physically, for his purpose.

David Lynch’s 1984 Leto, part of an infamous big-screen Dune flop, was Jürgen Prochnow. The respected William Hurt took on the role of television in the 2000s. Odds are Oscar Isaac will fare best.

10 Gemini: Frank Booth

To the Gemini readers, we apologize. To the David Lynch fans, you knew Frank Booth would be in here somewhere. A registered masterpiece from the misunderstood auteur, Blue Velvet follows Lynch-favorite Kyle MacLachlan as curiosity directs him deeper and deeper into the maniacal, depraved, grotesque world of Booth.

Booth, however, is an inarguable Gemini. Throughout Blue Velvet, he lashes radically between identities – a realization of the sign’s dual nature. Not to mention, he is the energetic center of every scene, a cunning smooth-talker, and even a convincing friend, before he turns foe.

9 Cancer: Rita/Camilla Rhodes

As the narratively-murky Mulholland Drive goes, Betty unexpectedly runs into Rita. Rita is dishonest and mysterious about her purpose and identity, Betty ultimately surmises this, and then Betty essentially adopts a position of full-hearted support of Rita.

Cancers are not dishonest by sign. In a Rita-like situation though, they would specialize in translating interpersonal distance directly into trust. We love Cancers for this ability to express confidence and affability, whether they are expressing much at all. For what it’s worth, Rita also is loyal and buys into the trust of Betty.

8 Leo: Bobby Briggs

Leos are easy to identify, but difficult to understand. They wear their sign on their sleeve, with often self-aggrandizing reputations and characteristics. But it is a deep-seated purpose that informs these actions, as is the case with Bobby Briggs.

Early in Twin Peaks, for both viewers and characters, Bobby is the high-school hotshot to fawn over and then regret. Given more screen time though, Bobby proves a complex and considerate character with patriarchal shortcomings potentially clouding his judgment all along. In Twin Peaks: The Return he is redeemed beyond question.

7 Virgo: John Merrick

It is tempting to characterize John Merrick, the real-life man, and The Elephant Man of David Lynch’s 1980 film, strictly by his deformities. While exteriorly shocking, he is portrayed by John Hurt as an interiorly rich human person.

Whether by the birth of sign or condition, John Merrick is a particularly shy and tragically stoic man. His overwhelming desire is to engage with others, and he asks little from them, though he is reserved. He also laments greatly in being let down, which happens consistently, but which also makes loyal Dr. Treves (also a real-life man) so crucial.

6 Libra: Henry Spencer

Imagine the premises of maturity and adulthood taking on the form of a horrific, surreal nightmare. Lifestyle merging is a literal nightmare. Parenthood is subjugation to extraterrestrial life. This is, as far as the average viewer can discern, David Lynch’s debut Eraserhead.)

Jack Nance’s (later to appear in Twin Peaks) Henry Spencer is our Libra tour guide through such a perspective. He prefers the path of less resistance and is overwhelmed with the idea of doing right by others, and yet he cannot help but engage with the existential makeup of everything around him.

5 Scorpio: Ben Horne

Scorpios, as indicated by the sign, have thick shells that are difficult to emotionally crack. Twin Peaks’ first season introduces an unscrupulous Ben Horne who cares for little but the bottom line. Season two witnesses an infamous Civil War-related breakdown in deference to Horne’s emotional breakthrough. Twenty-five years later, in Twin Peaks: The Return, Horne continues to elude sympathy without giving an inch of relatability.

Lynch was brilliant in his casting of Richard Beymer (not the only Twin Peaks character straight from the set of West Side Story). His musical, Scorpio charm is alluring despite decades-long resistance to emotional expression.

4 Sagittarius: Lula Fortune

Lula Fortune spends her high time making love to her boyfriend and watching him get into violent altercations. even more convincing of her Sagittarius free spirit, the boyfriend is played by the infamously looney Nicholas Cage.

Wild at Heart is by nature a rebel road movie – the essential genre for Sagittariuses who prioritize blazing their path. Throughout, the epic Laura Dern creates in Lula a young woman who is as off-the-wall as she is true-to-character. Her female co-star Diane Ladd was who ended up representing the still-underlooked film on Oscar night in 1991.

3 Capricorn: Betty/Diane Selwyn

Actors are artists, of course; but this does not reveal itself in Mulholland Drive’s plucky Betty’s can-do attitude. She approaches seedy sets well-prepared and believes in the process. She also responds with nothing but problem-solving positivity to the finding of a mysterious woman in her temporary domicile.

Of course, neither the corrupting arrest of Hollywood nor the piecing together of a mystery’s clues nor much of anything in the space of reality proves to be Mulholland Drive’s true purpose. For confusing us to no end, Lynch’s masterwork continues to be held among the finest films of the 21st century thus far.

2 Aquarius: Agent Dale Cooper

The Aquarius exists in the name of deference, but not at all out of weakness. They are bold and active in their pursuit of existence as part of a larger picture, whether this is expressed through civic law and order or relation to Tibetan Buddhism. Few Lynchian characters, or television character s at large for that matter, put others before self so confidently as Twin Peaks’ Special Agent Dale Cooper.

Agent Cooper presents the ultimate moral good amid an age of prestige television which prioritizes flawed protagonists and antiheroes. (That is until he enters The Black Lodge.)

1 Pisces: Dougie Jones

Two qualities reveal the complicated and frustrating ‘Dougie Jones’ as a Pisces. First, he operates most effectively at the intuitive level. Expressing (perhaps being cognitive of) very little, Dougie has an innate sense of things that are good, bad, dangerous, and of those which will steer him back to his lost identity.

This brings us to the second quality. Dougie Jones is an existentially broken being, working his way to identity reconciliation. While literal in the case of Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return, Pisces tend to relate to this psychological experience.
