The characters of ABC’s award-winning medical drama Grey’s Anatomy can be fixed into one of the nine Enneagram types, and so can fans of the show. After some careful consideration of the cast, every audience member can find their Enneagram twin and identify with them on a more personal level.

9 Enneagram Type 1 – Dr. Richard Webber

With both his best and worst traits, Dr. Richard Webber, former Chief of Surgery and Ellis Grey’s lover from way back when, best embodies the character of Enneagram 1 type, which belongs to the “gut” category of personalities and is known as The Perfectionist. Enneagram type 1’s largest concern is to do things right and with the loftiest of standards. They are sticklers for rules and are detail-oriented. They loathe mistakes and are exacting and precise. They typically make great teachers and are serious and straightforward in conversation. They prize hard work and practicality in every aspect of their lives.

It’s no coincidence, then, that Dr. Webber fits the bill. After all, no one gets to be Chief of Surgery at a major hospital without being a perfectionist. Webber also does what his duty demands when he fires Dr. Isobel Stevens for authorizing a deadly K-bath to a patient and has been hard on himself when it came to his affair with Ellis and marriage to Adele.

8 Enneagram Type 2 – Dr. Isobel Stevens

Dr. Isobel ‘Izzie’ Stevens, the emotional softie of the group, is definitely an Enneagram 2 of the heart and The Giver. These individuals are helpful, caring, and nurturing. They are sensitive and sacrifice themselves for others. They have a warmth and depth to them that’s unmatched by the other types. They’re also gentle, patient, and kind, with an aptitude to be a team player in all their life situations.

Clearly, no other OG Grey’s Anatomy character embodies this as much as Dr. Stevens, as she is always baking for someone (or herself) isn’t afraid to be vocal about how she feels and is approachable by all who cross paths with her.

7 Enneagram Type 3 – Alex Karev

Enneagram type 3’s, another type of the heart category, are The Achievers of the group. Three’s need to feel set apart, distinguished, and respected through their work efforts and other achievements. They obsess over their outward appearance to the world to make sure others see them as a success, uphold their reputation, and worry about the things they do. They are confident, driven, and ambitious. Furthermore, they are go-go-go, charismatic, and enjoy keeping busy so they can do and be more.

No one else is more aligned with this than Dr. Alex Karev. Coming from a broken home full of dysfunctional relationships and financial struggles, he fought to become a successful doctor so he could have a different life from the one he grew up with and began to formulate the idea to get him the Chief Resident spot when he brought the children over from Africa.

6 Enneagram Type 4 – Dr. Meredith Grey

The character that the show’s title takes after, Meredith Grey, is a hard Enneagram 4 from the heart – The Individualist. Individuals that belong to this type are unique, eccentric, and different, always set apart from others by their distinctive persona and aura. They have a profound need and desire to connect with others but are afraid they won’t be liked because they are often different, so they often dive deep into their talents in order to cope. Additionally, 4’s are quirky and endearing, passionate, creative, and may seem melancholic from feeling lonely.

It makes sense that Dr. Meredith Grey would be this Enneagram, as she set herself apart from day 1, worries about her “dark and twisty” inner self, and is always seeking to be happy with Derek, while being an extraordinary surgeon.

5 Enneagram Type 5 – Dr. Preston Burke

Dr. Preston Burke, head of Cardio and a scholar when he isn’t a surgeon, is the poster boy for this Enneagram type. Type 5’s — called The Investigator — desire to deepen their awareness of the world around them, expanding their learning and intellect, and keeping any physical and emotional needs at a minimum. They investigate things around them to escape from the demands of the real world, much like Dr. Burke does with his music to escape from surgery. They also live minimally, and Burke’s apartment, as fans remember, was just so.

Generally, Investigator’s are hard to get close to, have significant knowledge on subjects of their desire, are independent, and insightful, thinking before they speak, and giving well-thought-out responses to things. This is very much Preston Burke’s style, as well.

4 Enneagram Type 6 – Dr. Cristina Yang

The notoriously logical Dr. Cristina Yang, who has many unpopular opinions about her on Reddit, is an Enneagram type 6 from the head — The Skeptic. These folks will do anything to avoid risk (especially unnecessary risk) at all costs and uphold a reverence and respect of authority and institutions. They are on alert and stand with vigilance in order to be a couple of steps ahead of the game — and everyone else — always thinking about what could transpire next. They are organizers, precise and detail-focused, and communicate clearly with those around them.

Dr. Cristina Yang, then, exemplifies this Enneagram well, as she is precise in her work, unafraid to communicate to people around her the truth, and has the deepest regard for medical institutions.

3 Enneagram Type 7 – Dr. Derek Shepherd

McDreamy himself encompasses all the traits of The Enthusiast Enneagram type 7 from the head region. These personalities love to have fun, go on adventures, and really probe life with enthusiasm and experience. They want to be privy to everything life has to offer and don’t want to remain stagnant. Seven’s have a childlike quality with curious, sparkling eyes and a lust for life. They like taking on projects at work, are optimistic people, and are very well-liked among their peers.

Dr. Derek Shepherd is, unquestionably, this Enneagram type. He has many friends in the hospital, has eyes that one can get lost in, takes on new pursuits at the hospital (the Alzheimer’s trial and D.C. brain mapping projects), and enjoys activities in nature.

2 Enneagram Type 8 – Dr. Miranda Bailey

Dr. Miranda Bailey, Chief Resident for years, with both some of the best and worst personality traits in Grey’s Anatomy, and “mother” of the original interns that viewers came to know and love, is a perfect fit for Enneagram type 8 from the gut/body named The Challenger. These types avoid vulnerability and present a calm, cool demeanor. They exude confidence and self-assurance but can be intimidating, headstrong, and stubborn. Further, they are determined, in control of their environment, and have a ton of passion and power for the things they believe are right.

Dr. Miranda Bailey fits this to a T, as she helps the interns navigate their way through surgery – and life. She is also stubborn in her romantic relationships and condemns her interns when they’ve done something wrong, like when Cristina lied about Burke’s hand.

1 Enneagram Type 9 – George O’Malley

007 himself, George O’Malley, has some good and bad traits, but is certainly a type 9 Enneagram, belonging to the body. These folks are generally placid/docile and non-confrontational, choosing instead not to rock the boat and be easy to be around. They also have a wide circle of friends and acquaintances and are liked by many people. They are easy to love and want to go with the flow, keeping things calm and easy.

Dr. O’Malley displays these characteristics throughout his time on the show, wanting to smooth things over with Callie and Izzie when there’s a lot of tension in the room and doing things to make his family happy, like the turkey hunting.
