While You Wait For Pokémon Snap Try Out Umurangi Generation

Umurangi Generation is a fabulous title to try out whether you’re quietly waiting for New Pokémon Snap as a longtime fan, recently learned about it through the release announcement, or are just interested in something new as a gamer.

The game is available on Steam and is similar to a first-person shooter, only you’re shooting photos instead of bullets. In this setting, you play a photographer living in an a grungy dystopian-like future, full of colors and graffiti. A crisis is happening and you have been commissioned to take photographs and record history through the art of photojournalism. While you won’t be seeing any cute Pikachu carrying apples on their heads, you do get to be a Matthew Brady of your time, capturing icons for your fellow civilians. At just $14.99, you couldn’t get a better deal for what many consider a quality title.

The philosophy here is that art is completely subjective, so there’s no real standard of whether something is ‘good’ or not. This apparently counteracts the ideals of those interesting art teachers we had in elementary school who would throw your fingerpainting project away if it was red-red-blue paint order and not blue-blue-red. What your work is graded on is three Cs; color, content, and composition. The more colorful your photo is, the more points you’ll get, but it’s really more of a bonus than anything game required.

As far as content goes, you get rewarded extra for taking photos of rare things. For a mysterious reason, the intro tells you not to take photos of Blue Bottles or Portugese Man of War — you’ll have to play the game to find out why. Composition is generally the number of subjects in your photos and how you took the picture, as in what lens and settings you used. Just like in Pokemon Snap, new lenses and photo-taking tools are achieved as you progress through the game. Typically your work will consist of filling bounties for people, meaning taking photos of something specifically asked for and then making sure you deliver it to them. Completing a delivery will move you to the next work area.

Umurangi Generation is the perfect game to hold over your patience until more news regarding the launch of Snap is announced. Note that this title carries all of the similar play features that Snap does, so it will satisfy those yearnings you got when you saw the trailer drop.

Gamers interested in something artistic or related to photojournalism will adore this title, and many agree that its theme resonates with what’s going on in the world right now. So go ahead and test out your photography skills in Umurangi Generation.
