Who Dutch Van der Linde Was Before Red Dead Redemption 2

Dutch Van der Linde was the infamous ringleader of the Van der Lindes in the Red Dead Redemption games. In the first Red Dead Redemption, John Marston hunts down his old father figure whose delusions have taken hold of him. The second game, Red Dead Redemption 2, acted as a prequel, explored Dutch’s fall from a revered gang leader to a paranoid and erratic shell of what he once was.

Many Red Dead Redemption and RDR2 character backstories remains a mystery, and Dutch is no different. There were only few times where the outlaw made references to his family or his childhood over the course of Red Dead Redemption 2’s story, but from what he does admit, it sounds painful.

Having such a strained relationship with his own family may explain why Dutch made it a mission to form a tight-knit gang, which included John Marston and Arthur Morgan, who he viewed as son-like figures. Even when the Van der Lindes disbanded, he tried to form another group with the Natives before John eventually got to him, suggesting that Dutch craved a close family, likely because he didn’t get it in childhood.

What Happened To Dutch Van der Linde’s Parents

While much is left up to the imagination of players, the Red Dead Redemption games have shed some light on Dutch’s backstory. The future outlaw was born in 1855. His mother’s name, Greta, is mentioned briefly, though his father’s name is never mentioned. In one encounter, when the gang is socializing by the campfire, Dutch will admit that his parents were poor and struggled to make ends meet even before making the trip to America. He says to his fellow gang members, “My people were peasants starving in a field someplace. My mama’s were in Lincolnshire, daddy’s were outside of Rotterdam, at least that’s what they told me.” It’s unclear exactly when his parents died, but it’s revealed his father perished in the Civil War, likely explaining Dutch’s distaste of the South. His mother died of unknown causes sometime after he left home.

At one point, Dutch admits that he ran away from home when he was only 15 because of the strained relationship he had with his parents. Homeless and with no education, he began resorting to thievery and other criminal activities to make a living. Some time later, Dutch encountered Hosea Matthews for the first time. They both tried robbing each other, and seeing mutual potential, they decided to form a gang, which later became known as the infamous Van der Lindes.

Soon after, the duo picked up Arthur Morgan and John Marston, becoming like father-figures to the teenagers. More members began joining until they had a full-fledged gang, which Dutch’s charismatic persona easily allowed him to be the ringleader of. Much is still unknown about Dutch’s origins in Red Dead Redemption, but he clearly experienced a lot of pain early on in life.
