Park Seo-joon, who is set to appear in The Marvels, is well-known to those familiar with Korean dramas and movies but perhaps not to many other people. Months after it was reported that the 32-year-old South Korean actor was attached to Captain Marvel 2, his talent agency officially confirmed his involvement.

Park is the third major South Korean star to join the MCU, after Avengers: Age of Ultron’s Claudia Kim and Eternals’ Gilgamesh actor, Don Lee. It remains to be seen if he’ll play an established Marvel Comics hero or villain, as the details of his role have yet to be disclosed. While some have speculated that he might bring teenage genius Amadeus Cho to life, the actor’s age indicates he could be playing a different character. Instead, it’s possible that Park is playing an additional “Marvel” in the movie, with options including two former Marvel Boys in the comics, Quasar and Noh-Varr. Either way, it’s possible that Park will be an important part of The Marvels.

As for where MCU fans may remember Park Seo-joon, it’s important to keep in mind that The Marvels is the actor’s first time being associated with an American project. Up until now, he’s only acted in K-dramas and South Korean films. In 2019, he had a memorable cameo in Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, which made cinematic history as the first foreign film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. As Min-hyuk, Park shared a pivotal scene with Choi Woo-shik’s Kim Ki-woo. What he’s best-known for, though, is arguably his starring role in Itaewon Class, a series on Netflix about a man who tries to run a restaurant after going to prison for attempting to avenge his father’s death. Released in 2020, Itaewon Class was widely regarded as one of the year’s best South Korean shows.

Prior to Itaewon Class, Park was the male lead in a number of South Korean dramas, many of which being romantic comedies where his chemistry with the main female star was central to his performance. An example of this was when he played the arrogant and aloof Lee Young-joon opposite Park Min-young in the critically-acclaimed What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim in 2018. He also starred in Witch’s Love, Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, and Fight for My Way, and She Was Pretty. He recently made guest appearances on 2020’s Record of Youth, another K-drama that’s currently popular on Netflix. While Park is recognized primarily for his TV projects, the actor has had a successful career in the movie industry as well, with roles in Be With You, The Divine Fury, Midnight Runners, and more.

The actor, who has crafted a big following in South Korea, stands at chance at also becoming big in the West when he makes his Hollywood debut in The Marvels. Depending on who Park Seo-joon’s character is, he could even have a bright future in the MCU that goes beyond Captain Marvel’s next big-screen adventure. If he’s really playing Amadeus Cho, Noh-Varr, Quasar, or perhaps an entirely different Marvel Comics hero, he could return in future team-ups.
