The upcoming Peacemaker series on HBO Max was well-represented at DC FanDome, with a new trailer revealing the titular character fighting two different and distinct opponents—one apparently on a regular basis. While the Peacemaker trailer revealed many secrets, most of it is a series of quick-cut conflicts, arguments, and James Gunn-style superhero shenanigans. Throughout the trailer, Peacemaker (John Cena) takes a surprising number of smacks, falls, and crashes, so his adversaries will no doubt feature prominently in the show.
Now that the DCEU has produced several movies focusing on its flagship superheroes, Warner Bros. has turned to its minor properties and embraced its C-list and D-list characters to great effect. These characters are often less sacred to all but the most hardcore of comic book fans, leaving more room for the writers to put an interesting spin on things. A major influencer has been director James Gunn, who has made a career out of turning obscure characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy into overnight fan favorites. The success of The Suicide Squad demonstrates that just as much fun—perhaps more—can be had with characters that are lesser known. Given a new series, Peacemaker has a great opportunity to plumb the depths of DC’s more obscure characters to find adversaries, and two of them are on display in the DC FanDome trailer. One is clearly identified, but the other is something of a mystery.
The green costumed adversary who fights Peacemaker throughout the DC FanDome trailer is Judomaster, played by the Kroll Show’s Nhut Le. Judomaster was previously announced, but this is the first official look at the costumed hero, sporting a green getup instead of his trademark red and yellow. Although there have been several superheroes to use the mantle “Judomaster”, Le is likely playing a variation of Sonia Sato. Judomaster has no superpowers, but is an expert at the martial art of judo. He is a hero in the comics, but as The Suicide Squad demonstrates, the anti-hero Peacemaker is just as likely to get into a recurring scuffle with a hero as well as a villain.
The identity of the big-haired super-powered woman in underwear fighting Peacemaker in the DC FanDome trailer is less clear. There are only so many women in DC with super strength who can leap long distances. She may be the 4th World hero Big Barda, although this is unlikely since Barda is both dark-haired and part of a much-loved serious meta plot involving Apokolips’ ruler, Darkseid. Her character would more likely be saved for a 4th World film. A more likely theory is that she is Giganta, a super strong Wonder Woman villain who can grow in size; this goofy premise makes her a more likely candidate as an adversary for Cena’s Peacemaker. Lastly, she could be Maxima, an alien who periodically comes to earth looking for a strong mate, and usually has an obsession with Superman. Since both the mystery woman and Peacemaker are undressed during their fight scene, it may be that Peacemaker the series has picked up on this comic premise.
Peacemaker will no doubt face many other adversaries in his HBO Max series. Judomaster looks to be a recurring nemesis, and while there may be conflict with the anti-hero and apparent friend Vigilante at some point in the show, the identity of other one-off adversaries has yet to be disclosed. Under James Gunn’s direction viewers can expect the deepest dives into obscure DC lore to color the Peacemaker series.
